She’d Never Changed Her Gender Marker. Kansas Invalidated Her License Anyway.

The point is both cruelty and wiping trans people from public society.   The not only don’t understand being trans, don’t feel trans so it must not be real, and being transgender seems to upset their god they feel.  Their god created the trans person trans but that doesn’t fit with the world view of these Christians. So if their god is not powerful enough to get rid of trans people then the entire LGBTQ+ they will do it for him.  Sound like they created god in their image rather than being in his.  Hugs

A trans Kansas resident recently changed her name but not her gender marker on her license, fearing what Kansas may do if she did. The Kansas DMV still flagged her ID.

Andrea Ellis of Wellington, KS was one of many transgender Kansans who opened her mail on February 25 to learn that in less than 24 hours, her driver’s license would be invalid. The letter, issued by the Kansas Department of Revenue, informed her that because House Substitute for Senate Bill 244 (S.B. 244) “requires Kansas-issued driver’s license and identification cards to reflect the credential holder’s sex at birth,” her current license would become “invalid immediately” on February 26.

Ellis had been following the news closely in the past few months. She knew S.B. 244 would be going into effect. But she never expected the state to send her a letter invalidating her license.

That’s because Ellis had never changed the sex marker on her license in the first place.

Ellis last updated her driver’s license on January 7, 2026, after completing a legal name change in December 2025. Fearing her license would be revoked if she updated her sex marker, she deliberately held off on doing so.

“I saw the writing on the wall after listening to [Attorney General] Kobach’s testimony for H.B. 2426,” she said. H.B. 2426, containing the original transphobic legislation sponsored by Republican Kansas Representative Susan Humphries, would later be repurposed as S.B. 244 using the Kansas State Legislature’s “gut and go” trick. This allowed legislators to strip the original contents of S.B. 244, replace it with the contents of H.B. 2426, and pass S.B. 244 without giving the public time to weigh in, dodging accountability for the bill’s contents.

Most bills being passed during this session of the Kansas Legislature won’t go into effect until July 1, 2026. S.B. 244, however, contains a provision that allowed it to go into effect as soon as it was published in the Kansas Register, the state newspaper of record, on February 26. This tactic echoed 2025, when the Kansas Legislature made the same maneuver with Senate Bill 63 to rapidly ban gender-affirming care for minors in Kansas.

On February 25, transgender Kansans like Ellis started receiving letters in the mail informing them that as of February 26, their licenses would be rendered invalid. With no grace period, many recipients of these letters found themselves with less than 24 hours to figure out what to do in a rural state where driving is necessary for most people.

Ellis was confused about the letter she received, but felt as though she had no choice but to comply. She spends nearly an hour and a half each day driving to and from her job in Park City. Thursdays are one of her days off, so she didn’t have to call out of work on the 26th to go to the DMV. Still, having to suddenly get a new driver’s license was extremely inconvenient, as it would be for anyone.

“Wellington doesn’t have a DMV, so when I got the letter in the mail, I had to decide between going to the DMV in Winfield or the DMV in Derby,” said Ellis. Both locations were over thirty minutes away.

When Ellis left her house on Thursday morning, her license was officially invalid. She couldn’t comply with the new law unless she was able to get to a DMV, but in order to get to the DMV, she was forced to break the law. Every minute she was on the road, she was at risk of being arrested, jailed, or fined. Fortunately, she reached her destination without any trouble.

Once Ellis arrived at the DMV, she presented the letter to a confused employee. “It seemed like none of the DMV staff had any idea what was going on. I don’t think there was time for them to have any training on how to handle the SB244 stuff,” Ellis said. After presenting her letter, she was forced to surrender the license she had been issued less than two months ago and watch as the DMV employee cut a large chunk out of it, rendering it officially invalid. Her altered license was returned to her alongside her new temporary paper license. Both credentials designated her sex as “M.”

Paper license in hand, Ellis got in her car and started driving northeast to El Dorado, a town roughly 40 minutes away. “With a background like mine, I have to do something when there’s a crisis going on. I can’t just sit still,” Ellis said, referencing her past military service and reflecting on her deployments to Afghanistan. That morning, Equality El Dorado, the town’s local LGBTQ+ organization, had posted on Facebook asking for volunteers to help drive trans Kansans to the DMV, as well as cash donations to help people cover the unexpected cost of a replacement license. Other organizations, such as the LGBTQ Foundation of Kansas, also sprung into action to try and help transgender community members.

Ellis was ready to pitch in once she arrived in El Dorado, but she was stopped in her tracks. When she parked her car and checked her phone, she learned the Derby DMV had called her and left a message requesting that she come back to the DMV as soon as she could. Apparently, there was a problem with the new license she had just been issued. She tried to call the DMV back to get more information, but no one answered her calls. Frustrated, she got back in her car, canceled a doctor’s appointment she had scheduled for later that afternoon, and resigned herself to the fact that she was going to have to spend the majority of her day off at the DMV.

The DMV employee had to call a manager over for assistance, and Ellis waited patiently as the DMV staff tried to solve the issue. “They didn’t tell me what the problem was, but I overheard them saying there was a ‘flag’ tied to my ID in their system that they had to remove,” Ellis explained. Eventually, she was given another temporary paper license. Just like the license that had been cut up that morning, just like the first temporary paper license she had been issued as a replacement, and just like her original Alabama birth certificate, the sex marker printed on her newest paper license identified her as “M.”

By the time Ellis met up with me at Pennant Coffee/Good Company in Wichita, a local queer spot, a coffee shop by day and bar by evening, she’d driven a total of over 131 miles and spent close to three hours on the road. Sitting at Pennant, surrounded by pride flag decorations and chatting with the visibly queer and trans staff, it felt surreal to think that we were in one of the worst states in the U.S. to be transgender. But Ellis’s story proved the extent the state was willing to go to torment its transgender residents.

“I had never even changed my sex marker. All I did was change my name in December, so that’s the only way they could’ve flagged me,” Ellis said.

The fact that Ellis was flagged for her name change alone suggests the state of Kansas is intensely monitoring transgender citizens. In a state where changing one’s legal sex marker has now been rendered impossible, Ellis’s story shows that even just changing one’s name can be enough for a transgender person in Kansas to be identified, targeted, and forced to surrender their legal documents.

On February 27, 2026, the ACLU of Kansas announced it would be filing a lawsuit challenging S.B. 244. However, for the time being, S.B. 244 remains in effect. With the 2026 Kansas gubernatorial election looming large in November, it is extremely concerning to see the way the state is already using its power to not only disenfranchise its citizens, but effectively immobilize them in a state where driving is so essential to daily life.

    1. Hi ali. Thanks for pointing out the comments. I went back and read them. Seems a lot of pain and uncertainty in both Kansas and Missouri. Such needless cruelty and suffering for no good reason but bigotry and hateful religious beliefs. That adults no longer can even choose to transition unless they have wealth is crazy because gender afirming care is medical care that doctors have deemed necessary for the patient. As for socially letting kids transition what is the harm? Are tomboy girls going to be required to not wear pants but wear skirts and dresses? Are boys with long hair going to be forced to cut it short into an army military cut? And who gets to decide what is girly enough or boyish enough for each kid? The fact is puberty blockers are safe and completely reversible and do not sterilize the young person who takes them. The result of taking them prevents life long harm caused by suffering through the wrong puberty making a trans people look like the wrong gender that they have to work so hard to hide and change. The effect of stopping puberty blockers is simply that the person goes through puberty of the sex assigned at birth. So there is no harm except a religious man being attracted to a trans woman because they look like the woman they identify as and that embarrasses that man that he got aroused by a trans person. Speaking of that I will just add that before these nanny laws blocking porn sites from adults because religious groups feel it is wrong to watch and …. yourself porn hub used to release the information on what porn was most viewed by each state or religion. Turns out the most religious led states which have the strictest anti-trans laws watch the most transgender porn. Wow. Hugs

      1. Once they get puberty blockers blocked, they’ll go after birth control. We already know this. From there, much opportunity will fall away for women. Any and all women.

I recall in high school when medical privacy was finally granted to women, many of my friends went on birth control, mostly in the interest of safety. Some had single mothers who wanted to protect their daughters. One of my friends had only begun getting periods over the summer before she went on the pill; she had a 2 month-long period after starting the pill. But, she was fine, and moved on about her life not worrying about conceiving if she ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and got raped (she wasn’t active; she was 14. Her mom had had some bad experiences, though.) I bring this up because it’s basically all hormone therapy, generally speaking.

Transgender porn! I don’t know why there wouldn’t be, it just didn’t occur to me. I remember watching male gay porn in the 80s with friends. I like a sausage party. And now, if we have more tornado warnings this evening, I have something to think of to take my mind off the weather; featuring what all might happen in transgender porn. Huh! I might think of that before the storms come, if they come here. I’m curious.

        1. Ali you are a wonderful person and a constant source of unexpected reasoning about reality. Thank you for all you wrote and the emotions behind it. It So much I did not know or understand that becomes clearer to me. And I also like a sausage party. BTW there is an animated movie about that theme done from the view of grocery foods that is hilarious. I also liked a short movie called short bus.

While no where near the threats faced by your female friends and their need for protection, I have written offhandly before that as a kid well before being a teen, I was the party favor at my older hell sibling’s weekend parties while the adopting parents went off to their weekend long parties. I over heard the older females discuss the need to make sure of protection and how that a single sex event could leave one pregnant. They passed me off to please their boyfriends. I was 7. After that and that night I was terrified that after every teen boy who raped me at her parties I would get pregnant. I had no idea if it had to be in the butt or the mouth I just lived in constant fear I would have a baby. I had no one to talk to and went to the hell spawn sibling and begged her to not make me pregnant. She laughed, which I did not understand why and she then used my fear to require ever more things from me. Gods I wish there had been some kind of sex ed. I understand the real fear young girls fear who are entering the dating scene but I was just a stupid uninformed abused kid who was terririfed of what older girls than me went through every day. They got out of it by passing their horny boyfriends off on me and my body to please them. What some did not know is their boyfriends prefered me to them. They were dating them to have access to the parties, and so to me. I wish the country could understand their fears, offer complete training for both girls and boys, and teach consent as an iron clad thing. Hugs

That would be good, if they did that, Scottie. I thought it was a requirement, though, in the 60s and 70s. Well, and 80s, though that’s when the rightwing started to chip away at it. In many families, the parents took care of it for the reasons you state. Or, they went to the doctor, and asked the doctor to do it. But we had filmstrips from 3d grade through Jr. high, then a full-fledged Health class in freshman year in high school, and all the info was there Even a 50s VD scare film! One of my good friends fainted during that one.
I guess farther South, they managed to squeak by without doing it, I don’t know. These days it amazes me that in Springfield, MO, the home of the Assembly of God denom, we got good, comprehensive health, civics, and government classes, plus the other core classes would underscore those things as applicable to the subject. I’m thankful there was sense for a while. Pretty sure they don’t teach much of that there anymore!

            1. Hi Ali. My little cow town elementary school only offered a “health” lesson as part of the 6th grade (12 year olds) science lessons. The boys and girls were separated, and we boys were shown a basic drawing of the uterus but no information about the vagina or its parts. As for the boys sex education we were told not to touch it unless washing it and to shower or bathe every day. It was like the bare minimum. All about hair growing and starting to smell and sweat. Nothing about consent or the emotional side of of sexual relations. I was already well versed in how to do sex, but not in the why’s. How was the easy part, but the emotonal componete was missing in my life, it was just a required act for me, but I do admit I had crushes on a few of the teen boys and liked to see them at the parties or when they would come to visit the hell spwan as an excuse to use me. But those classes did relieve me as I learned only girls get pregnant. But then the teacher made a girl getting pregnant a very bad thing and boys and girls shouldn’t touch each other until married as adults. No explaination as to what touch each other meant but it got all the 12 yr old boys giggling. At that age the other boys were still whispering misinformation to each other with embarrassed giggles and I wondered why their versions of sex were so different from what I was doing / had been doing regularly by then. I never spoke up or told what I knew, never shared real sex with them because I had learned the lesson well and deeply not to ever talk or tell what was happening to me. Hugs

  1. So, 1), look at them, going out of their way to be hateful and bigoted in Kansas. But 2), it seemed like others were more considerate and understanding about it. Conclusion: The GOP-led legislature is full of closed-minded assholes. Cheers, M

    1. It’s actually the state AG pushing these things, including the statute. The Republican legislators are quite piggish, but the AG really pushes hard against things that people here actually want.

DMV people here are very nice. They have an extra empathy nerve, I think, because the job (state-funded) doesn’t really pay well at all. There is a retirement pension, at least.

      1. Hi Ali. I have a funny story to tell about the leaders of a state pushing hate and the people in the local departments being totally wonderfully accepting. Ron and I were the first same sex couple to get married in Lee county florida. The state of Florida hatefully fought every attempt to legalize same sex marriage in the state. It was still not legally countrywide. But the people had passed resolutions and ballot measures demanding it and in late 2014 the state AG decided to give up fighting it in court and allowed the right of same sex marriage to be legal in Florida starting in January 2015. On January 12th the first day it was legal Ron and I rushed to fill out the paper work at our local clerk of the court office. We were worried about facing a hostile staff because of the Kim Davis events. After we filled out our paper work we went to the desk. The clerk looked over our papers and asked if we would wait a few minutes. She then went away from the desk to the middle of the area where the other clerks gathered. Ron and I started to worry and our hearts were heavy. Then the supervisor and original clerk walked back towards the counter surrounded by all the other clerks.

The supervisor greeted us and explained they had a slight problem and asked for our help in the matter. I thought I might cry. Then she informed us of the problem. Seems they normally rotate the clerks who gets to perform the marrage seromonies. The package we paid for was a fifteen minute ceremony and a dozen photos. But here was the problem the supervisor explained.

Every clerk in the office wanted to be part of the ceremony. They all wanted to be part of it and to do the marriage. If we agreed they would temparyerly close the office, everyone would go into the marrage room and each clerk would have a small part. We were stunned. We agreed. Remember the package we bought. Well the ceremony took nearly an hour. We got over 40 pictures taken by the staff. We got hugs and cards from all the staff. James was there with us. They were all so kind and loving and wonderful. They took plenty of pictures of James and congratulated him as he told everyone he was our son. Well we did feel that way about him. So our fears of facing hate and anger were wrong, we were accepted with love and kindness. Hugs

    2. Hi Michael. The unnessasary cruelity and caused pain make no sense when the people pushing these laws suffer no harm. All studies dispute their hateful lies and distortions of facts. The fact is transitioning socially and medically is part of a regulated medical treatment plan deemed necessary by the patients doctors. These same legislators and haters would scream about their violated rights if their medical care had to be reviewed and regulated by law. I have these same kinds of legislators who think they know more than medical professionals and medical organizations due to their religious moral church doctrines and have decided that they need to tell my pain doctors how much medication they can prescribe to help me deal with my chronic pain levels. I replied to Ali above about the unessasary harms to trans people and asked about social transitioning of kids. Who gets to decide what is girly enough for the girls to do and what is boyish enough for the boys to do? Can girls play with hot wheels and Tonka trucks and boys being alowed to play with action figure dolls? Will tomboy girls be forbidden to wear pants having to wear dresses and the boys with long hair having to get military stile short haircuts? My reply to her might be something you would be interested in reading. Hugs
