The New York Times reports:
In the coming weeks, the United States plans to provide a welcome gift to white South Africans entering the United States as refugees. They will get an Android tablet, an American flag and copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. They will also receive a packet of literature that provides a sanitized, Trump-approved view of American and South African history, one that criticizes racial equity and civil rights laws and promotes claims of discrimination against white people.
The welcome bags include a report commissioned by Mr. Trump during his first term that downplays the role of slavery in the country’s founding, and a children’s book accusing South Africa’s government of “favoring the Black population.” The gifts would be the latest step by the Trump administration to welcome the white minority in South Africa, even as the president maintains a ban on refugees fleeing from war and persecution everywhere else in the world.

Ugh. Just ugh. What awful people to come up with a “welcome” like that, even if the “refugees” appreciate it. Then they’re awful, too.

Hi Ali. I can understand what you are saying. I agree. But I have been listening to the news on the recent rulings of the SCOTUS. Alito claimed there was no sign of racism in anything tRump said about Haitians and Haiti. Justice Kagan in her dissent listed all of tRump’s hateful racist remarks about Haitians. Ali I did not know any non-white people as a kid. Yes my adopting parents were racist but as there were no black/brown people around us it did not show. Then I went into the military and I honestly did not see a difference between myself or others based on skin color. It just did not occur to me. When I was a shift leader in Berlin I was assigned a black new private and told he had a bad attitude and I was to write up everything he did as he was going to be discharged. Long story short I did not do that. I treated him like everyone else. When he acted up I talked to him privately and was shocked at his attitude and why he was acting out. He had been mistreated in other commands by racist white people. He was angry and sick of it. I shocked him by agreeing with him. Maybe it was because I was gay and knew what being mistreated unfairly felt like. We formed a deal, I would work with him and he with me. I would expect from him only what I did from others and I would stand between him and any racist bullies in our unit. When I left the unit I stood with him as he was promoted, his uniform became top form. He became a great asset. All because I listened and treated him fairly as did the rest of the shift. Did we have racists in the unit? Maybe, but they did not bother him I kept checking. I guess Ali I see racism the way I see hatred of LGBTQ+ people, I just don’t understand it. Hugs
