WH Doc Declares Church/State Separation Defunct

June 26, 2026

The Hill reports:

A draft final report from President Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission released on Friday calls for “building bridges between church and state,” a seeming reversal of a longstanding U.S. legal principle. “Americans must know their rights and stand with courage when those rights are challenged,” the commission’s report reads.

“To preserve this freedom, we must build bridges, not walls, between the City of God and the City of Man. If we do so, we will pass on a free and prosperous nation to the next generation,” it continues.

The argument is a stark reversal of the legal principle that calls for the separation of church and state. The phrase “separation of church and state” does not explicitly appear in the Constitution, but the Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

The commission is chaired by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who recently declared that James Talarico is going to hell.

Today he said, “From this day forward, the phrase separation of church and state has no power.”

Oh, unfortunately, we think about it every day.A “faith director” in every federal agency isn't a victory for religious liberty. It's an attempt to weave religion into the machinery of government. That's exactly why we have church-state separation.

Neither is Jesus. The Constitution says Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. "Separation of church and state" is the shorthand for that principle, one the Supreme Court has recognized for decades.

  1. Well, I went, and I read, and this isn’t anything remotely declaring the separation defunct nor erasing it, even as the reports’s fans are doing so themselves. Not saying it hasn’t happened before now in some areas, and not saying more won’t happen still, but this document doesn’t bring that about.

We the people allowing it to happen brings it about. I keep hoping this christian nationalist group will remember that the main reason for the separation was not only to not have a government religion, but to protect churches from government direction and persecution. And this admin will turn on these cn’s as soon as they steal their money because it’s what they always do, and it will be allowed because of what these cn’s are pushing. These cn’s will suffer the way they wish to bring suffering to we the majority of people in the US.

As to what christian nationalists should bear in mind: Before the US’s founding, religious groups had come to this continent as religious refugees, and the founders wanted to participate in nothing like creating religious refugees. I wish those refugees had found their way to Haiti instead of here. (Nothing against Haiti, but it was almost 250 years ago. Things maybe could have been better there for it, even. Anyway.) I say that because Greg Proops had a fantastic line in a riff about the US and the world, that why couldn’t the US get Italians or Spaniards instead of Puritans; his view being we’d all run around on little scooters tooting at each other, we’d drink wine, and take siestas. Instead, we got Puritans, and we still bust our butts for money and don’t enjoy life. I look at least once a year, and cannot find that on YouTube; it was on Comedy Central years ago when they were mostly standup shows.
