Have You Heard of Kris Kross? These 90s Teen Hip-Hop Stars Endured Fame and Tragedy
The teen hip-hop duo known for wearing their clothing backwards had everyone jumping in the early 1990s.
If you were around in the 1990s, youβve probably heard of Kris Kross, the pint-sized rap group that had everyone wearing their clothes backwards and moving to their mega hit βJump.β
With the help of producer Jermaine Dupri, friends Chris βMac Daddyβ Kelly and Chris βDaddy Macβ Smith started a cultural phenomenon. But it wasnβt long before issues with their image and battles with drug addiction brought their success to a screeching halt. We wanted to take a look back at the careers of these talented teens and the impact they made during their time in the spotlight.
This is the story of Kris Kross. (snip-click through; there’s a slide show with captions. Ah, youth! And we were all younger, too.)

The Crucible and more in Peace and Justice History for 1/22
| January 22, 1953 The Arthur Miller drama, ”The Crucible,” opened on Broadway. It was a parable that reflected the climate of fear that pervaded American society and the politics of its time, witchcraft in the late 17th century, communism in the mid-20th. In both times there existed also the fear of false accusation. From the New York Times review of the Broadway revival in November 2001: βToday, the play is a cautionary tale of astounding immediacy. Its themes include the pathology of rumor, the arrogance of the religiously righteous, the dangers of private panic in the face of public terror, and the individual’s difficulty in acting rationally in the face of mob hysteria.β ![]() scene from the original production Read the playwrightβs reasons for writing it:Β |
| January 22, 1973 Women won control of their reproductive rights when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that Americans have a constitutional right to privacy, and thus women may terminate a pregnancy before the last 10 weeks. Only during the last trimester, when a fetus can survive outside the womb, would states be permitted to regulate abortion of a healthy pregnancy. Prior to the Courtβs ruling that the decision was private and belonged to the pregnant woman, abortion was essentially illegal in all states except New York (as of 1970). | January 22, 2001 President George W. Bush signed a memorandum the day after his inauguration reinstating full restrictions on U.S. overseas aid that might go to any program that provided abortions or considered them an option for women. Known as the Mexico City policy, or global gag rule, first signed by President Ronald Reagan, it had been withdrawn by President Bill Clinton as soon as he took office.Β |

This could be a resource, or you could be or know of a resource
Either way, I thought I’d paste it in here, and whoever needs it, wants it, or knows something about it can do their thing. The title leans in one particular direction, but there is more info within, and I pasted it all here.
Seeking trans-friendly employers who sponsor visas

Nobody should have to move to another country to be themselves.
However, Iβve spoken to multiple people who feel they need to move away from the US in order to avoid harms caused byΒ the new administrationβs executive orders that target trans people. Exactly how to do this is sometimes opaque and feels difficult.
If you are actively hiring for positions in a company that is friendly to transgender people, in a country that is safe for transgender people,Β andΒ you are willing to sponsor visas for people seeking to emigrate for these positions, I would like to hear from you.
If this is you, please enter your details here, and Iβll make them available on a public, open source website soon.
If youβre unsure which countries are considered to be safe for transgender people, and if your country is one,Β Rainbow Relocation has a reasonable list, and others are available.
To be clear: I want trans people to feel safe here in the United States, and I want them to be here. But I also understand peoplesβ need to feel safe in the current moment. I am not urging people to move, but I would like to make life easier for people who want to. Iβm making this request in the spirit of assistance, because Iβve already been asked.
I am also probably not the right person to put this together! But I didnβt see anyone else doing it. If you are from a reputable organization that supports transgender safety in a professional way, and you would like to take ownership of this list or collaborate, or if you are already doing something like this and I missed it, please email me atΒ ben@benwerd.com.

ACLU Sues Trump Admin Over Birthright Citizenship
ΒβDenying citizenship to U.S.-born children is not only unconstitutional β itβs also a reckless and ruthless repudiation of American values. Birthright citizenship is part of what makes the United States the strong and dynamic nation that it is.
βThis order seeks to repeat one of the gravest errors in American history, by creating a permanent subclass of people born in the U.S. who are denied full rights as Americans.
βWe will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged. The Trump administrationβs overreach is so egregious that we are confident we will ultimately prevail.β β ACLU executive director Anthony D. Romero.
New French guidelines show doctors overwhelmingly support gender-affirming care
This study is grand.Β If you read it you will see it debunks the trans haters talking points of lower bone minerals and the complete shown to be false Cass report.Β
The guidelines also directly push back against claims inΒ the U.K. Cass ReviewΒ that puberty blockers affect cognition, revealing that they have βno negative effectβ on any measures of intelligence or academic success.
The guidelines even provide a definitive rebuke to the claim that puberty blockers cause lower bone mineral density (BMD) by saying, βTrans youth have an average BMD before the onset of puberty that is lower than that of the general population, regardless of treatment. This is probably related to the consequences of dysphoria: less physical activity, eating disorders, and/or poor dietary balance.β After taking the hormones that align with their gender identity, the guidelinesβ authors note that trans patientsβ BMD is βcomparable to that of the experienced gender.β
The guidelines strongly oppose a beloved tactic among anti-trans activists, dubbed the βwait-and-seeβ approach, wherein medical providers render no care to see if the patient still desires transitional care β the approach has been likened to conversion therapy. The approach, also known as βgender exploratory therapy,β is swiftly criticized by the guidelineβs authors who state that it βdoes not reduce psychological distress.β Instead, it βincreases the risk of committing suicide and can affect psycho-affective and cognitive development.βΒ
