Racism like bigotry is surging in the south right now. All in backlash to a black man being elected president. The racist went crazy. All backed by big money wealthy racists. The university president said that public universities should stay neutral on social controversies that is why they are doing it. Wrong. Racism is not or at least shouldn’t be a controversy, a difference of view points. It is wrong. I say again for those needing clarification. Racism is wrong. Period. It needs to die off like slavery and the old Jim Crow laws, that sadly are making a comeback. Diversity, equality, and inclusion programs are very much needed, as are LGBTQ+ centers at schools along with gay straight student groups. These all help bring in more of the people who historically have been disadvantaged. Understand what they do. It is not quotas. It is making available places, education, jobs that were traditionally once denied to those groups. The fact that sometimes it means white straight cis people don’t get everything they want to or get that position that they think they are owed then too bad, you have lots more opportunities. It is crazy entitlement. The idea that every straight cis white person automatically is better and deserves opportunities before someone not white straight cis is just horrible. Yet that is what is sweeping red states. Republicans pushing the idea that somehow opening a door for those that had then closed, somehow hurts the white straight cis people. The republicans like fundamentalist Christians love to play the victim, they love to be aggrieved. The republicans look at everything as a limited pie where something for one person means less for them. That is not the way it is, equality and inclusion benefits everyone. Hugs. Scottie
North Carolina’s public university system board voted Thursday to repeal a nearly five-year-old diversity, equity and inclusion policy, meaning its 17 schools will likely join other major universities in cutting diversity programs and jobs.
The 24-member University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved its agenda, which included the diversity policy repeal, with two members voting against the repeal. Campus changes are expected to take place at the start of the next school year.
UNC System President Peter Hans [photo] said in his meeting remarks that students and faculty should be allowed to confront “competing ideas” but the role of public universities is to remain neutral on “political controversies.”
Students are holding a press conference ahead of the UNC Board of Governors' meeting this morning. The BOG will vote on whether to eliminate a policy requiring DEI at all public universities in the state. Students are urging them to keep the policy & DEI initiatives. #ncedpic.twitter.com/u0T386vHuK
#NCED Today the UNC System Board of Trustees voted to repeal its Diversity & Inclusion Policy in favor of “institutional neutrality.” In a survey conducted by the Forum, students and others expressed concerns about the impact of this decision.
And getting rid of diversity isn’t politically neutral either. To be completely neutral, they would have to present both sides or nothing at all politically. They took a side.
It’s very simple. The white Christians of NC feel threatened of losing their majority superiority so they want to send bat signals to people of color to leave or stay away.
A reminder: If the religious right’s puppet, Donald Trump, gets back into the White House, this sort of thing — this thing in North Carolina — will soon become national policy.
“… … students and faculty should be allowed to confront “competing ideas” but the role of public universities is to remain neutral on “political controversies.”
“Competing Ideas” = racism, homophobia, trans phobia, xenophobia, et al.
“Remain Neutral … …” = BULLFUCKINGSHIT! This decision is not being neutral. It’s being racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, et al and political.
I want to thank personnelente at https://personnelente.wordpress.com/2024/05/17/immigration-facts/ for the link. The fact is far too many lies are being told about immigrants due to racism and political advantage. The facts show that immigrants commit fewer crimes than citizens, and that immigrants add to the economy not diminish it. The US economy does far better with immigrants than without them. Hugs. The myth that immigrants, documented or otherwise, drive wages lower and crime higher thankfully seems to be petering out. That’s not enough
I’m worried instead that our changing attitudes about immigration, our rhetoric and our behavior, will ultimately curtail immigration policy to the point where we cause serious damage to our nation. In a fast-developing, fast-urbanizing world in which a fierce global battle for labor and talent is well underway, America is already underperforming. We have one thing going for us, though: robust immigration rates. And we’re about to give it up.
Post 9/11, America reframed the debate about immigration to be one of national security and borders, rather than economic imperatives, growth or national prosperity.
In terms of sheer numbers, America has more people living in it who weren’t born in the country than any other nation in the world, by a lot.The Pew Research Center estimates that there were 50.6 million people who are not native-born in the United States in 2020. That’s more than the immigrant populations of the next four largest nations combined. But, as a percentageof its population, America now ranks 25th among nations with populations greater than 1 million; roughly 1 in 7 of America’s residents are foreign-born. For the world’s pre-eminent “nation of immigrants,” that number isn’t all that high. As many as 1 in 5 of Canada’s residents are foreign-born, and in Australia foreign-born residents make up almost 30% percent of the population.
What is behind this shift? Post 9/11, America reframed the debate about immigration to be one of national security and borders, rather than economic imperatives, growth or national prosperity. It’s telling that unlike most other countries, in the U.S., immigration now falls under the Department of Homeland Security, rather than economic development, or the Commerce Department or under a department called, say, “Immigration.”
Nearly a quarter century later, this reframing has left us with an enduring misunderstanding about what immigrants contribute to this country. Without reversing this narrative, and a strong national strategy for maintaining — and likely increasing — high immigration numbers, America could soon start to suffer irreparable economic harm.
The myth that immigrants, documented or otherwise, drive wages lower seems to be petering out. Much of the mythology around this stemmed from a largely debunked 2015 Harvard study written by George Borjas called “The Wage Impact of the Marielitos,” which argued that Cuban refugees who formed the 1980 Mariel boatlift caused a large drop in wages for native-born workers in Miami. This proved false. And on a much larger scale, our national unemployment rate of under 4%, with wages rising faster than inflation, lays waste to the idea that an influx of workers hurts the economy in general, or wages in particular.
And then there is the spreading notion, racist-but-effective, of “migrant crime.” While crime is of course committed by every demographic group, Americans who are not native-born commit less of it than native-born Americans, perhaps in some part because they have a unique disincentive — deportation — to do so. In fact, since the 1960s, immigrant men are 60% less likely to be incarcerated than those born in the U.S. The data proves that rampant migrant crime is a feeling, not a fact.
When we mainstream these counterfactual notions, we distance ourselves from meeting the long-term imperative of maintaining America’s position as the world’s top destination for immigrants. Our continued economic success hinges on growing our levels of immigration. We simply can’t afford to mess this up.
As a percentage of its population, American immigration numbers lag behind competitor nations, like my home country of Canada, which have long understood the benefits of strong immigration and have taken great pains to make themselves attractive destinations for immigrants (as Canada did for my parents, who emigrated from Kenya). We want — we need — our working-age population to grow; more labor means a better, stronger economy. In the face of an imminent drop in those numbers as the baby boom generation retires, immigrants are more critical than ever. Immigrants will fill in this worker gap.
Prioritizing immigration will keep our population from stagnating and possibly shrinking. More than three-quarters of immigrants in the U.S., according to Pew Research, live and work in this country as a result of following normal immigration channels. Given new U.S. Census Bureau data, Brookings estimates that high immigration will allow us to counter an aging populace and help build our working-age population.
With each slip of the tongue when referring to undocumented migrants as “illegals,” we are not simply perpetuating a myth among Americans but, perhaps more dangerously, we are solidifying a reputation as a country that is unwelcoming to the very migrants we so desperately need.
Immigrants also help to alleviate critical worker shortages in a wide range of American industries, filling in the gaps by doing jobs that native-born workers either don’t want to do, or aren’t educated to do. Foreign-born workers comprise 22% of all workers in the U.S. food supply chain, 38% of home health aides, 29% of doctors, 23% of pharmacists and 15.2% of nurses. In STEM fields, more than one-fifth of workers are foreign born, and foreign-born migrants are responsible for more than 75% of patents from the top 10 patent-producing U.S. universities. Those patents lead to startups. Those startups lead to jobs. The workers in those jobs pay taxes and consume, and often launch startups of their own.
The data is clear. In the words of Alexander Hamilton — (or at least the version of him written into the eponymous play by Lin Manuel Miranda), — immigrants get the job done.
With each passing day, each slip of the tongue when referring to undocumented migrants as “illegals,” we are not simply perpetuating a myth among Americans but, perhaps more dangerously, we are solidifying a reputation as a country that is unwelcoming to the very migrants we so desperately need. In doing so, we are putting our future in peril.
I’m not the only immigrant in my family. Every member of my family for four generations and over the last 125 years has ended up becoming an immigrant, from India, to South Africa and Mozambique, to Kenya, to Canada and the United Kingdom and, in my case, to America. We know what it’s like to look for and, ultimately, to find a home. And we will fight to make that home a better place for our children and for those who come after us.
Immigrants are not our problem in America — yet. Let’s make sure we don’t get there.

*** Serious trigger warning for those who are fundamentally against nudity or seeing male sex organs displayed causally in a non-erect state. There is nudity of both female and males, and as the title suggests this is about the penis. So no complaints if you watch and are shocked by it. However I do look forward to the comments on this. ****
To be clear I like penises! Hey I am a gay man, I have most of my life been pretty open about that. I like to see them. In my youth was the time when the huge modesty push was happening in the US, which I think is part of the big anti-trans bathroom issues. People have been indoctrinated that any sight of the nude body of another person is so horrible you are permanently damaged immediately and forever. There was a time when kids showered after PE in open showers. Now it is separate changing and showering stalls. Why, because we teach boys so little about their bodies they have horrible anxiety about their size and look of their own penis. They are also too scared of the subject to ask an adult be it teacher or parent. We adults cause this. When I was in a church boarding school the boys’ dorm had large open shower rooms. If you went to the YMCA it was the same. Nude swimming for males was the norm until the 1970s, and I would have loved it. Even if girls were present, which I have also posted happened to teen boys a lot and was normal in college. I have posted this when called out about it. I loved the nude beaches in Germany as a young guy in the Army. I have no trouble showing my body nude including my penis even at 61 years old, my problem getting nude these days is my rather protruding belly and out of shape body. Yes I know … all human bodies are grand works of art. But some are drawn much better than others. 😁🤣🤷♂️
I think a lot of the current regressive notions of sex and the human body are driven by the strident religious groups working hard to force their regressive social morals on everyone. I have posted about a woman in Utah who was changing in her closed garage and her son burst into the room and seen mommy with no top covering, so got a good view of mommy’s breasts. She was crucified by the legal establishment and labeled a sexual deviant.
To be clear I am talking casual nudity. Not sex in public. Yes that is a turn on for some, but seriously most of the people having public sex are not worth wasting time watching. Plus with so much free stuff on the interwebs, who needs to see it in public places where you might have to explain to your spouse what they are doing. That was a joke. But in places were even the sight of a nude body online is illegal now, it may have to return to for pay circus tent revival affairs, the return to the days of peep shows. Flashers are people who need help, and the thing to do is look and then laugh. I have heard it ruins their entire day.
I am talking people doing every day stuff nude, or clothing optional. I love that in some places you can bike ride or walk about nude. Why not. And yes I look and watch. Why not? The reason we have such sex hang ups is that we have turned one part of the body into a much bigger thing that in reality it is. That was not a joke. We as a society have made that body part a huge mystery never to be talked about. Boys are told never to touch it for pleasure … that is screwed up. They are made afraid of something wonderful for most of them.
Anyway enough intro, you have an idea of what is coming. Enjoy this thought look into the way society has been taught to view the penis. Hugs. Scottie
Why are penises so weird? And why are we so obsessed with how they look? Filmmaker Conor Reilly sets out to explore our complex relationship with willies – by planning to get naked himself. Can he overcome his greatest fear and strip off in front of his nearest and dearest (and a few strangers) in the name of documentary filmmaking?
Ladapo first earned national infamy for a 2020 press conference outside the Supreme Court with insane nutbag Dr. Demon Semen, who says that women get STDs by having sex with demons in their dreams, that drag “opens portals” to demons, and that Biden and Pelosi “downloaded their brains to the internet” and are now “demonic clones.” Lapapo has been accused a falsifying a study on COVID vaccine side effects and of lying about his history of treating patients at UCLA. He last appeared here in January 2024 when he called on the public to refuse all COVID vaccines.
When asked to wear masks to help the country deal with a worldwide pandemic, the maga hate groups claimed they wouldn’t do it because they can’t breathe wearing masks. The went to school board meets and ranted and screamed at the board about it. Yet now those same Proud Boys, Three Percenter’s, Oath Keepers, and the Nazi protesters marching in the streets who call themselves Patriot Front all wear face masks to avoid being identified and lose their jobs. If they think they represent so much of the country as they claim, why not be open about what complete morons and jerks they are. This is another reason DeathSantis and racist governors in some red states are outlawing any Diversity, Inclusion, and Equality programs so white people can be open racist bigots to fellow workers without getting reprimanded or facing consequences for their actions. Hugs. Scottie
.@FLSurgeonGen Joseph Ladapo says mask wearers simply 'like to hide their faces'
The idea of banning these books about race and LGBTQ+ people is to remove representation of those concepts / people from society, from public view. It is not about protecting kids, it is about enforcing white straight cis fundamentalist Christian values on everyone and making everyone conform to a small segment of society view of what is proper to be allowed. So yes these guys pull this shit. After all who does this girl think she is to second guess old white Christian men. Hugs. Scottie
One of Hanover student and Girl Scout Kate’s “Banned Book Nook” at Morr Donuts in Mechanicsville, VA
The Hanover County Board of Supervisors spent their Wednesday afternoon meeting approving language to honor a handful of Girl Scouts for completing their Gold Award projects, among other items.
But one Girl Scout, whose project was designed to fight what she sees as censorship in the county’s school system, had her commendation “amended.”
Cold Harbor District Supervisor Michael Herzberg pulled out the proclamation for Hanover County student Kate Lindley from a group of proclamations for Girl Scouts achieving their highest honor.
It’s an idea she came up with after Hanover County removed over 75 titles from school libraries, claiming they contained “inappropriate language,” “violence” and “sexually explicit content.”
Lindley’s project got media attention, and she’s since grown her project’s collection to over 400 books, giving access to the censored literature where it might otherwise be denied.
You can find out more via Lindley’s Instagram account for the project here.
And while her original proclamation language specifically mentions quote “identifying locations where books were available that had been banned by Hanover County Public Schools libraries,” Supervisor Herzberg’s motion led to quote “amending” -Lindley says censoring- that detail along with any other mention of banned books or censorship.
“The Board of Supervisors has bestowed upon me the greatest honor anyone fighting censorship and banning could receive by censoring me and my project,” Lindley said.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Hanover County said that items on the consent agenda are quote “always subject to change or amendment” and that’s what happened Wednesday.
And while Lindley is set to graduate in the next few weeks before heading off to college, she plans to attend and receive whatever commendation the board of supervisors is willing to give her.
But she plans to let them know how she feels afterward.
All of these attacks exemplify pushback against inclusion and welcome for ‘the other’: “The first and most fundamental way in which white Christian nationalism threatens American liberal democracy is that it defines ‘the people’ in a way that excludes many Americans. White Christian nationalism is a form of what is often called ‘ethno-nationalism.’ Liberal democracy rests on what is usually called ‘civic nationalism’ It defines the nation in terms of values, laws, and institutions.’” (The Flag and The Cross, p. 114)
Throughout the book the authors explore and re-explore the meaning of the deep story of white Christian nationalism: “White Christian nationalism is our term for the ethno-traditionalism among many white Americans that conflates racial, religious, and national identity (the deep story) and pines for cultural and political power that demographic and cultural shifts have increasingly threatened…. (T)he term Christian in white Christian nationalism is often far more akin to a dog whistle that calls out to an aggrieved tribe than a description of the content of one’s faith.” (The Flag and The Cross, p. 44)
