POLL: 78% Of Texans Back Some Access To Abortion

The Texas Tribune reports:

At a time when Texas is poised to outlaw the vast majority of abortions if the nation’s highest court overturns constitutional protections for the procedure, a recent University of Texas at Austin poll shows most Texan voters think access to abortion should be allowed in some form. Texas would make performing most abortions a felony if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

The survey found that 78% of respondents believe abortion should be allowed in some form while only 15% said it should be never permitted. Around 39% of poll respondents said Texans should always be able to obtain abortions as a matter of personal choice, and 11% of respondents thought abortions should be available for other reasons in addition to pregnancy resulting from rape.

In truth, it will return to that being legal, as it once was. And in point of fact, is often still tolerated today.

Ask any woman and if it hasn’t happened to her, she’ll know someone personally who was refused a job, denied a promotion, or fired specifically because she got pregnant or was deemed to “might get preggers.”

I do. Not me, but someone I know. Lawyer told her the chances of winning a discrimination lawsuit was thin because her former employer claimed she was fired for poor job performance and being chronically late to work.

The other side of the coin is that when Dem voters do manage to turn out massive numbers to give the party nominal control, even though it requires us to win by ~10% just to secure a slim majority, the ones we elect end up being too fucking chickenshit to do really bold things. Or 1-2 of them will decide they will be the roadblock to accomplishing anything significant or vital.

And thus we have our current status quo: Rethugs don’t give a shit how unpopular their policies are. And elected Dems far too often refuse to consider passing stuff that would be incredibly popular because (1) they’re too timid and (2) too many of them are in the pockets of wealthy donors.

This is what the Russian war is doing to the people of Ukraine.   There are people alive buried under the rubble in that steel mill and Russia won’t stop the bombing so the Ukrainians can dig them out.  It is past time the countries of the world showed that this inhumanity won’t be allowed to continue.   Russia hopes the world will lose interest and they can be as cruel and destructive to human life as they please.   We cannot let that happen.   This could have been a group of kids that got near that landmine.   Remember Russia dropped thousands of trip wire triggered bombs from the skies over Ukrainian cities and towns.    The idea was to kill and main as many civilians as possible.   The idea is to cause terror so the people will beg Russia for peace at any cost or terms.   The world cannot let this continue.   We have the ability; we just need the will.

Wade was leaked to Politico, conservatives immediately jumped on the opportunity to focus on how and who leaked the draft to distract from women losing a fundamental right. Anti-abortion groups and mainstream media outlets also hopped on the trend and even floated baseless conspiracy theories and misinformation that a clerk from a liberal justice leaked the document.

“Almost as soon as Politico published its explosive story on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s leaked draft opinion, which strongly suggests the court is about to overturn Roe v. Wade, conservatives responded by focusing not on the content of the news, but how it was obtained. Online Monday night, there were nearly immediate calls to find and punish the leaker. In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell insistently told reporters that the prospect of recriminalizing abortion was “not the story for today,” but rather the supposedly dangerous precedent of the leak. The idea behind a lot of the laws of the US is the constitution gives the right to privacy, liberty, and body autonomy.   Everything from the civil rights laws, Loving vs Virginia which allowed different race people to marry, abortion, Lawerance vs Texas which gave everyone the right to have sex as they wished instead of just penis in vagina, (that law that banned oral sex and anal sex was used just against gay men but did apply to everyone) and of course the right to same sex marriage.   The average right wing only wants their hated people subjugated and the right to discriminate without repercussions.    But the real power behind this is the hard right businesses and the religious right.   Both need to take the country back before the government had the authority or ability to stand up for the people.   Why do you think there is such push back against anything resembling what the other advanced countries do for their public, because these groups lose more control every time the people get more right / benefits from their government?   It might threaten those over the top profits.   But also it threatens the religious leaders that know if people had rights and acceptance along with comfortable living they wouldn’t need religion to offer relief.  Anyway anyone who doesn’t think that the next rights to fall are anything not straight male Christian did not read the leaked report.  Alito to specifically mention that there was no right to privacy in the constitution, and that is what Lawerance vs Texas was based on that gave the right of people to enjoy whatever sex they wanted with another adult is based on.   Remember Ted Cruz when he was the AG of Texas tried to ban adults from using sex toys in the state.   Welcome to the Puritan age.

First of all, Obergefell is a bad Supreme Court decision and if we had a Supreme Court worth its salt, they would overturn Obergefell.

But they’re not going to. They explicitly say — Alito says, I think three separate times in that decision that I read in nearly its totality on the air yesterday, that this has no impact on other cases of different lines. Which is a clear reference to Obergefell, repeatedly.

But Democrats know deep in the cockles of their tiny little Grinch-like hearts on abortion, they know that the abortion issue is not a winner. So they’re trying to expand it out – well, you never know.

The Supreme Court, they might go after gay rights, they might go after — sure, you’re right. The same Supreme Court in which Neil Gorsuch idiotically ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 covers transgender people is now going to overrule Obergefell.
