Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

Steve Kelley Comic Strip for December 12, 2021

I was surprised at the commenters who not only agreed with this cartoon but cheered it on.   The misinformation in the US is overwhelming and dangerous.   Let’s address each panel starting with the top left.   Rittenhouse posed with white supremacist where he was flashing the white power finger sign while grinning seemingly real happy.  Rittenhouse was declared not guilty of murder but he did kill two people after taking an assault style rifle to a place he did not belong because he knew that possible violence could happen and then antagonized others there to the point they attacked him causing him to fire his weapon to defend himself.   I think he shouldn’t have been able to use the self defense argument but the court allowed it.

Second panel.  If you watched the videos carefully Nick Sandmann did what he is accused of, he stepped down into the path of Phillips while his buddies cheered him on.   Phillips couldn’t back up nor move sideways but Sandmann could.   He knew that and what he was doing.   A large teen blocking the path of a smaller older man with a cheering crowd at his side, you tell me if that is not deliberate intimidation.

Third panel.  There is documented evidence of the cooperation between the tRump campaign and the Russians.    There was obstruction documented in the Mueller report.  the fact is no one investigated collusion as Mueller had already been told he couldn’t indict tRump and the term collusion has no specific legal meaning in criminal law; there’s no such criminal charge.   But again there is no doubt of the tight way the tRump campaign worked with the Russians.

Fourth panel.   And what boss would not fire an employee that lied to them?    Hugs

Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

Lisa Benson Comic Strip for December 10, 2021

Unemployment is 4.2 % Wages are rising. Please tell me again how the Media is promoting something that isn’t true!   The wages for the lowest earners are rising faster than the highest earners for the first time in decades! How is that a media smoke screen?   Just read an article about US jobless claims at 52-year low. All lies, I guess.   The media reports the SAME employment numbers as “bad” under Biden that they said were “good” under Trump. Incessant screaming about inflation when it is a natural part of supply and demand. When people are polled about the issues without saying which stance is from Dems or Repubs result in HUGE numbers in favor of liberal and even PROGRESSIVE ideas being highly favored, especially taxing the wealthy and large corporations, but the media keeps saying that Dems need to move even further towards Repub ideals to appeal to the voters. The media is corporate, it definitely doesn’t favor Dems.

Of course it depends on which media you look at. Fox, OANN, Newsmax, Breitbart and similar will tell you that anything a Democrat does is wrong, even if a republican does it first.   Hugs

Mike Lester Comic Strip for December 10, 2021

Another example of Mike Lester’s incompetence with statistics. There has been no statistically significant difference in the increase in homicide rates for cities with Democratic and Republican mayors. US cities with Trump hotels have higher homicide rates than the US as a whole. That’s just about as meaningful a statistic as the one M. Lester is relying on.   More big cities have Democrat (or non-partisan) mayors than GQP or even GOP. That has been true all along. And it’s also true that bigger cities have more criminals who are committing more murders than last year or the year before. But if you look at the top 5 or 10 cities with GOP mayors and the most murderous cities of similar size with Democrat mayors, you will see that the rates have no correlation w/ the party in charge. None.   Interesting. The top ten states in terms of murder rates are: Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, S. Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Maryland and Georgia. Most of these are deep red states. Maybe they need Democratic governors.   Hugs

There are elections in those cities.

Portland ran all “nonpartisan” candidates.   I don’t see an R candidate in Tucson.   Albuquerque ran all “nonpartisan” candidates.   Austin ran all “nonpartisan” candidates.   I don’t see an R candidate in St. Paul.   Baton Rouge was a 56/43 result.   Indianapolis was a 72/27 result.   Louisville was a 61/27 result.   Toledo ran all “nonpartisan” candidates.   Columbus -the nonpartisan incumbent ran unopposed as far as I can tell.   In Rochester it looks like the D candidate ran unopposed   In Philly it looks like an 80/19 result.   This doesn’t look like the Rs are trying Mike. 5 of those races were all “nonpartisan”. While I agree that those kids would want the murder rate to go down I don’t see any of them looking to Rs to save them.   Results pulled from Ballotpedia or Wikipedia (depending on which came up first).

I see pictures of Republican families armed to the teeth with guns. Some of which are the kind that are designed just to kill humans. Meanwhile they support an attack on the nation’s Capital, refuse to impeach a criminal in office and still try to claim that they are the party of Law and Order. This is gaslighting at the Olympic level.

These are local elections and they allow people living in the community a voice in what the elected officials do.   That is democracy.   The people have to be here in the country legally to vote, they just don’t have to be a citizen like in federal elections.   So stop the fear mongering about a simple issue of fairness.    Hugs

American Christians busted pushing conversion therapy in Costa Rica by undercover reporters

https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2021/11/therapists-affiliated-u-s-hate-groups-telling-lgbtq-people-costa-rica-gay-wrong/

Therapists linked to two U.S. organizations are telling LGBTQ people in Costa Rica that homosexuality is wrong and that only a “sadistic god” would create a gay person, according to a report from Open Democracy.

A second report also found that the same conservative Christian groups are also undermining U.S. laws, pushing conversion therapy in municipalities that have outlawed the practice. The undercover investigation found two conversion therapy counsellors operating in states where the practice is prohibited. One advised a reporter posing as a 17-year-old lesbian to “suppress” her orientation, including by starving herself.

Therapists connected to Focus on the Family and the Exodus Global Alliance made the comments while ‘treating’ or offering to ‘treat’ undercover reporters posing as gay or lesbian people.

Focus on the Family was founded in 1977 by conservative psychologist James Dobson. Dobson, who Mike Pence considers his role model, is known for his extreme views, including his push for corporal punishment that has now been found to have traumatizing effects for children. Dobson also once said that the shooting at Sandy Hook happened because of gay marriage, and in the same vein published a newsletter with a letter that said fathers should take their sons into bathrooms to show them that they have the same private parts.

Exodus Global Alliance is the global wing of the disbanded and controversial ex-gay group Exodus International. James Dobson also founded the Family Research Council, a group designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Conversion therapy is considered “ineffective” and “harmful” by the Pan-American Health Organization and has been condemned by Costa Rica’s official associations of psychologists and psychiatrists. The Netflix documentary, Pray Away, offers an in-depth analysis of the ex-gay movement, with testimonials from former members of Exodus International explaining the sinister machinations behind the anti-LGBTQ group.

One of the reporters for the exposé posed as a married woman who had become involved in an extra-marital lesbian relationship. She contacted Enfoque a la Familia – the Costa Rican arm of Focus on the Family – via its website, where she was able to book and pay in dollars for an online therapy session with a psychologist listed on the site.

Another reporter posed as a young gay man. He went to Exodus Latinoamérica, Exodus Global Alliance’s group.

Both therapists the reporters contacted were certified by the Costa Rica’s Psychology Association, CPPCR, despite the organization calling for a ban on conversion therapy.

The woman’s therapist said the word “guilt” ten times and told the reporter that homosexuality was wrong. The practitioner also went on to say that homosexuality is the imperfect “lifestyle” that is learned or developed.

“God created man and woman[…] our perfect match, and he’s perfect and marvelous. This [homosexuality] is learned, is something developed on the road,” she said.

The practitioner then asked if she would like to cast out her desire for women.

At Exodus, the male reporter’s psychologist said that homosexuality is a sin.

“I serve God first. I’m not treating homosexuality as common people do[…] God says this is a sin, so we treat it as a sin.” She also said that “nobody is born homosexual, because only a sadistic God would forbid this sin in the Bible and, at the same time, create you like that.”

Another reporter went undercover to an Evangelical church in the nation’s capital San José for counselling on how to handle his “unwanted homosexuality.” He experienced a 90-minute session full of misleading and derogatory claims from a pastor.

She claimed that most gay people are drug users, compared gay sex to defecation, and said that porn, sexual abuse, and parental sin are reasons for being gay. The pastor also claimed that the reporter was probably born after his parents watched porn, thereby making him “born tainted.”

The pastor defended her claims about the links between homosexuality and drug use, pornography, sexual abuse, parental sins, and masturbation, which, she said, are “conclusions” drawn from her “40 years of experience as a Christian spiritual counsellor” and from biblical verses that she quoted for each of the claims in her reply.

Costa Rica is looking to ban conversion therapy in 2022 with a bill, but LGBTQ rights advocates acknowledge that even if it passes, religious groups like Exodus and Focus on the Family will find a loophole around the ban. Most conversion therapy practitioners are not licensed medical professionals.

Shi Alarcón, a sociologist and sexual diversity activist for an LGBTQ youth support group in Costa Rica known as Casa Rara, says she has seen these conversion therapy camps expanding across Costa Rica. Teenagers are being subjected to the traumatic torture at alarming rates, she said.

“If I listen to ten teenagers per month, eight tell me they were taken to or were offered [conversion sessions at churches] or were told by their mothers: ‘We’re going to do this,’” Alacarón said.

Alacarón supports a conversion therapy ban, but she says that we need to advocate for broader scopes on banning conversion therapy in all places, including churches.

“We need to widen the scope of hate crimes to include ‘conversion therapy’ – and stop calling it ‘therapy,’” she said. “We need to stop relinquishing the words that we use to feel fine – ‘family,’ ‘therapy,’ ‘health’ – to conservative groups.”

Costa Rica’s bill is poised to face strong opposition from anti-LGBTQ organizations like Focus on the Family and Exodus International—through branches that are shown to be under the control of its U.S. affiliates. Both groups still operate in U.S. states where conversion therapy is currently banned.

I have chronic pain that limits my quality of life, it restricts / limits my ability to function.   That is just a fact of my life.  I had a muscle relaxer doctor had been prescribing me for years that worked great for me.   The Florida legislators felt they knew better than my doctors, better than any doctors and said that if the doctors office also wrote prescriptions for some other medications then they couldn’t write prescriptions for the medication I was taking.  Even if I was not taking the other medications.   If they did prescribe the medication I was using and the patient died for any reason, any reason, the pain doctors could be charged with murder.   My doctors immediately stopped prescribing the medication.  I have never found another that works as well for me.   Thanks Florida.    Hugs

Are you also wanting the Covid death totals and lack of active government plans for distribution of the soon to be approved vaccine that was happening during tRump’s last year in office?

While millions wait for a lifesaving shot, the U.S. death count from covid-19 continues to soar upward with horrifying speed. On Tuesday, the last full day of Donald Trump’s presidency, the death toll reached 400,000 — a once-unthinkable number. More than 100,000 Americans have perished in the pandemic in just the past five weeks. In the U.S., someone now dies of covid every 26 seconds. And the disease is claiming more American lives each week than any other condition, ahead of heart disease and cancer, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.“It didn’t have to be like this, and it shouldn’t still be like this,” said Kristin Urquiza, whose father, Mark, died of covid in June, as the virus was sweeping through Phoenix.

https://khn.org/news/nation…

See it is easy to pretend only good came from a presidential term if you are willing to ignore the facts and reality. The reason gas prices were so low is there was a lack of demand due to the world wide Covid Pandemic and large over supplies this caused. What brought the price of gas back up was renewed demand as the world started to function again as the pandemic was being handled. Again world wide. Scottie

Some 15 year olds are more mature than others, but no 15 year old is an adult.   There is a long history of charging minors as adults since the 1970’s as part of the war on crime.  It presumably helps deal with the fact that an age is not the same as a degree of maturity. It’s also a technique for dealing with a particularly depraved crime, such as murdering several people where the DA thinks the maximum punishment for a juvenile isn’t sufficient.

I would prefer a magical system where each person is tried as they actually are, and then upon conviction, sent to rehab where they would stay until (magically) we knew they were better, including time in a half-way house to prove they were better. Puritan USA can’t cope with that though. PUNISHMENT is the primary goal.

Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

And this shows what the right wing is now, trolls and insult performance artists.    Lets not bother to be role models for the kids nor a democracy other countries look up to.    Hugs

Progressives or corporate Democrats.   The issues the progressives are talking about and promoting are the same ones the entire party was trying to promote and implement way back in the 1970’s.   Back then people like Nancy Pelosi were all for the progressive things like universal healthcare, free education, food assistance, and so much more.    Then Nancy got addicted to the corporate money and she couldn’t get enough.   She was one of the ones who pulled the Democrats to the right year after year decade after decade.   When she was asked why she should be Speaker of the House she replied because she brought in the most donation money.    But while the Democrats moved right to be part of the wealthy corporations the people of the US have not.  In fact the country has moved more left supporting the LGBTQ+ community, legalizing cannabis, voting rights for people who finished their prison sentences, universal single payer healthcare, help for food insecurity, help for the homeless, help with childcare, and so much more.    It really has become a civil war in the US between the wealthy and the public.    Hugs

Only because the misleading right wing media keeps lying about vaccines, masks, and the personal responsibility people have to stop the spread of the virus.   Hugs

The unity problem is more the result of unrelenting nonsense attacks by right wing media, often simply made up stuff they know their base will not check. Law and order is actually better as the tRump admin used unidentified illegal squads to kidnap people off the streets who were using their constitutional right to protest. These people were taken to hidden locations, illegally questioned, detained, their items searched with out permission, never charged with a crime and then released often with out their phones or other property. Reporters protected by law and the 1st amendment were attacked and their equipment destroyed all to please the wannabe strongman dictator, tRump. The US has far more world respect now with Biden president than when tRump (also known as TFG, the former guy) was in office. TFG destroyed long running friendships with democracies and tried to start friendships with only authoritarian governments. The world reacted badly to that. The laws and people enforcing the borders have not changed despite Biden and the people want them too. The US is still violating the rights of those seeking refuge status as they did before. We still have freedom and some of us are still sane. Talk about nonsense phrases meaning nothing and everything. And before someone shouts Covid as a loss of freedom fact is the SCOTUS found a century ago the government had a right to enforce health laws / requirements. And lastly fuel prices. Fuel prices started coming down right after TFG approved selling the Saudi’s weaponry that every other US president refused, for good reason. But the Saudi’s put lots of money in both tRump’s and his son-in-law’s pockets so who cares about indiscriminate killing, right. Then came the pandemic with Covid ended a lot of need for fuel, travel mostly stopped, office buildings were empty, prices of fuel fell from lack of demand and over supply. Now that demand is rising and the OPEC nations throttling the supply to make up the profits they lost prices of fuel were rising. That is no more. For the last three weeks fuel prices, the cost per barrel of oil has fallen. If you are not seeing it at the pump it is because of price gouging and profit taking. Facts matter. These are the facts. Scottie

Those are not the facts. Where’s your proof that people were kidnapped off the streets and had their phones stolen from them? Which even if that were true would be far less than what happens to those that our current pretender in chief doesn’t like. At least those people, again if even true, would still have their lives. As for the bovine excrement relating to reporters, they relentlessly attacked Trump and he refused to take their questions. No squelching of first amendment rights. Also, if by media you mean news reporters, there is no media anymore, let alone right-wing. They all spew opinion and propaganda these days, even Fox is left-wing, and no three pundits who are slightly right of center are not right-wing nor do they make Fox right-wing. Though, if it somehow magically did, they’d be one outlet amongst dozens.

Hey Anon, ever hear of google? Easy to find the facts. But I did the work for you. Here are three links proving that yes tRump illegally had people kidnapped off the streets.

Federal law enforcement officers have been using unmarked vehicles to drive around downtown Portland and detain protesters since at least Tuesday. Personal accounts and multiple videos posted online show the officers driving up to people, detaining individuals with no explanation about why they are being arrested, and driving off.

https://www.npr.org/2020/07…

And, officials offended by charged terms such as kidnapping would like us to instead use the term “lawful detainments”. But under federal and state law, kidnapping is commonly defined as the unlawful transportation and confinement of a person against their will.
By that definition, John Parks was kidnapped by police and armed federal forces on 29 July in Portland, Oregon. “I was surrounded by men in camo, and black,” he told me, with tense inflection, “They put me in the back of an unmarked vehicle and refused to tell me why I was being detained.”

https://www.theguardian.com… And one more in case you miss the point that this was an illegal detention of people exercising their constitutional right to protest read this https://www.washingtonpost….

tRump bragged about having the US Marshal service track down and kill a left wing antifa supporter who shot a maga man in self defense. According to witnesses the police never attempted to arrest the suspect they just ran up and opened fire on him.

President Donald Trump on Thursday gloated over the September killing of Portland, Oregon, murder suspect Michael Reinoehl by law enforcement officers who had been deputized as US Marshals. “We sent in the US Marshals,” Trump said during a campaign rally in North Carolina, adding that it “took 15 minutes (and) it was over.”
The President immediately followed that statement by appearing to indicate that authorities had no intention of ever taking Reinoehl alive.
“They knew who he was; they didn’t want to arrest him, and in 15 minutes that ended,” Trump said.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10…

I think it funny you think tRump did not want to talk to reporters. Did you see no media coverage during the four years tRump was president? He took every opportunity he could to push himself in front of the media cameras. He craves attention and wanted as much TV time as he could get. Again these are facts, sorry if they disrupt your alternative reality. Scottie

Oh, okay, so you’re one of those people that considers a riot to be a peaceful protest. Got it.

12-YO Takes His Life After Being Bullied For His Sexuality

DOE removed the anti-bullying page following an inquiry about the site’s LGBTQ resources.

The Florida Department of Education has removed an anti-bullying portal from its website, including links to LGBTQ advocacy groups.

DOE removed the anti-bullying page after the Florida Capital Star, a right-leaning online publication, inquired about the LGBTQ resources listed on the site, sparking a content review on the page. The inquiry precipitated related changes to the DOE webpage for the Office of Safe Schoolscreated under the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, until DOE can review the content.

When pulling the bullying portal, the department removed links to state anti-bullying policy, LGBTQ advocacy groups and other bullying prevention resources.

Lawmakers this spring passed the Parents’ Bill of Rights, which states that public schools cannot infringe on the “fundamental rights” of parents to direct the upbringing of their child — extending to decisions about education, health care and mental health. Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ administration and DOE has used the legislation to ban blanket mask mandates in schools. But during the 2021 Session, debate centered around fears from LGBTQ advocacy groups and allies that the legislation could reveal to parents the gender identity or sexual orientation of children who came out at school before coming out at home.

The bullying portal included links to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ StopBullying.gov and its page addressing bullying in LGBTQIA+ Youth. Until this fall, the page instructed educators to protect children’s privacy, guidance that could run afoul of the Parents’ Bill of Rights.

“Be careful not to disclose or discuss sexual identity issues with parents or anyone else, without the young person’s prior permission, unless there is an immediate threat to their safety or wellbeing,” the page read.

Groups like the pro-LGBTQ civil rights group Equality Florida criticized the DeSantis administration for pulling the website, calling it a “staggering escalation of its anti-LGBTQ agenda.”

In a statement, Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith called for the links to be reinstated.

“Attacks on LGBTQ students from Tallahassee are fueling a toxic, dangerous environment on the ground,” Smith said. “From the passage of explicitly anti-transgender legislation this year to proposed legislation that would jail doctors and parents for providing lifesaving medical care to transgender children, a politically-motivated assault on the LGBTQ community is putting young people at risk. Vulnerable youth deserve better than a DeSantis Administration intent on putting them in harm’s way in order to score cheap political points.”

Other links removed from the DOE website included the department’s model policy against bullying and harassment for school districts and a checklist for school districts when developing anti-bullying policy.

DOE’s Office of Safe Schools, which answers to the Education Commissioner, currently Richard Corcoran, was created after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to provide safe learning environments for students and educators.

Seventh-grader dies by suicide after being told he'd go to hell for being gay

Grieving parents in Tennessee are urging everyone to get educated about bullying after their 12-year-old son, Eli Fritchley, took his own life.

His mother, Debbey, told WKRN-TV last week that her son wore his beloved SpongeBob sweatshirt nearly every day.

“I think probably because he was in the same clothes every single day that they used that as a weapon,” she said. “He was told because he didn’t necessarily have a religion and that he said he was gay that he was going to go to hell. They told him that quite often.”

His father, Steve, said the bullying was “really abusive.”

“I don’t think it was ever physical. I think it was just words, but words hurt. They really hurt,” he explained.

The Fritchleys now hope to launch a foundation to fight bullying and promote suicide awareness. Their GoFundMe page has received more than $12,000 donations so far.
