News We Can Use In The Week Ahead

The Week Ahead

January 4, 2026 Joyce Vance

What is Donald Trump running away from so hard? Is it the fifth anniversary of his January 6 insurrection, which we will mark on Tuesday? It should be.

It could be Jack Smithโ€™s newly released testimony, which is damning and damagingโ€”and we havenโ€™t even gotten the release date of Volume II of his special counsel report, due sometime in February unless Trump manages to hang it up in court. On balance, Congressman Jim Jordanโ€™s โ€œWeaponizationโ€ work is backfiring.

It could also be the Epstein Files. DOJ missed its reporting date to Congress over the weekend, and the full release of the files is still nowhere in sight.

Donald Trump has a lot to try to hide from. It could be all of the above, and itโ€™s all closing in on him this week. In the past, he has always been able to delay or distract just long enough for the public to forget. But this week, the past seems to be catching up with the lame duck president.

That may be at least a partial explanation for Trumpโ€™s strike on Venezuelaโ€”distract, distract, distract. Itโ€™s a better explanation than Trump as a committed warrior against narcoterrorism. That one doesnโ€™t work particularly well for Donald Trump, who pardoned Honduran ex-president Juan Orlando Hernรกndez, a man who former National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in our Substack Live on Sunday morning, โ€œpersonally trafficked tons of cocaine into the United States and actually said at one point he wanted to shove cocaine up the noses of the gringos.โ€ When Trump pardoned Hernรกndez, he said, โ€œIf somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesnโ€™t mean you arrest the president and put him in jail for the rest of his life.โ€ As Jake pointed out, and I agree, โ€œthe drugs excuse holds no water.โ€

This week, weโ€™ll be watching Congressโ€”and watching Trump watch Congress, which has been showing a few signs of life lately. I donโ€™t want to oversell that, but this is definitely a week that warrants paying attention, particularly with the privileged War Powers Resolution I mentioned in last nightโ€™s post coming to the Senate floor this week. The ball is in Congressโ€™ court.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war, as well as to โ€œmake rules concerning captures on land and water.โ€ Presidents before and including Trump, as experts at the Brennan Center explain, have tried to claim some of that authority for themselves, using โ€œoutdated and overstretched war authorizations like the 2001 and 2002 authorizations for use of military force.โ€ Multiple presidents have also โ€œasserted an inherent authority to undertake airstrikes, raids, and other military interventions without prior congressional authorization. When Congress has authorized conflict, such as the War in Afghanistan and Iraq War, presidents have overread Congressโ€™s approval and expanded U.S. military involvement into countries that Congress never contemplated. Compounding the problem, presidents often fail to give Congress the information it needs to oversee these conflicts.โ€ This is not a Trump problemโ€”presidents since at least George H.W. Bush have claimed a share of Congressโ€™ power. But Trump, who is uniquely interested in amassing presidential power, has the potential to move on from Venezuela and keep going, if Congress doesnโ€™t step in and assert itself.

Itโ€™s possible for two things to be true at once: itโ€™s possible that Maduro was a corrupt, dangerous leader and also, that our Constitution and the separation of powers demand preserving. Our country does not, and indeed cannot, remove every dangerous leader around the globe from office with in-country strikes. We could strengthen local populations with stability-enhancing programs like USAID (which the Trump administration, of course, has cut) to increase the ability of local populations to act on their own impulses. We can engage in vigorous law enforcement, like the prosecution of Hondurasโ€™ former president. But we can do so without permitting our president to freelance as a warlord, especially one with dubious motives. So donโ€™t buy into the false equivalency that says the smash and grab in Venezuela that resulted in Maduroโ€™s arrest was a righteous exercise of the presidentโ€™s power.

The constitutional prescription for fixing this problem of presidential overreach is Congress. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker had something to say about that over the weekend, in light of the Trump administrationโ€™s strike on Venezuela.

Cory Booker@CoryBooker

โ€œToday,โ€ he wrote, โ€œmany leaders will rightly condemn President Donald Trumpโ€™s unlawful and unjust actions in Venezuela, and I join them.

But then, Senator Booker put the blame precisely where it is due. He continued, โ€œjust as glaring, and far more damning, is Congressโ€™ ongoing abdication of its constitutional duty. For almost a year now, the legislative branch has failed to check a president who repeatedly violates his oath, disregards the law, and endangers American interests at home and abroad.โ€

He called out the Republican-led Congress for choosing โ€œspineless complicity over its sworn responsibilities.โ€ He condemned its inaction in the face of Signalgate, with Trumpโ€™s โ€œSecretary of Warโ€ Pete Hegseth escaping any censure for โ€œthe reckless leaking of classified information that put American troops at risk.โ€ The senator also pointed to the โ€œstunning absence of accountabilityโ€ for the administrationโ€™s โ€œillegal use of military force destroying vessels and killing people in the Caribbean and the Pacific without congressional authorization.โ€

Booker cited a litany of Congressional failures:

No hearings.
No serious investigations.
No enforcement of checks and balances.
No accountability.

He called Congress cowardly and submissive.

We are long past due for someone to speak so plainly to the country about the Republican-led Congressโ€™ failure to do its constitutional duty. The question is, who is listening, and will it lead to action this week? As my good friend Norm Eisen like to say, I am not optimistic, but I am hopeful.

Booker writes that โ€œRepublicans in Congress own this corrosive collapse of our constitutional orderโ€ and that their submission to Trumpโ€™s will โ€œnow stands as one of the greatest dangers to our nation and to the global order America claims to defend.โ€ The fact that Maduro is โ€œa brutal dictator who has committed grave abusesโ€ does not, Booker concludes, suspend the Constitution. And so, he drives home the point of what must come next:

  • โ€œThe Constitution is unambiguous: Congress has the power and responsibility to authorize the use of military force and declare war. Congress has a duty of oversight. Congress must serve as a check, not a rubber stamp, to the President.โ€
  • โ€œWe face an authoritarian-minded president who acts with dangerous growing impunity. He has shown a willingness to defy court orders, violate the law, ignore congressional intent, and shred basic norms of decency and democracy. This pattern will continue unless the Article I branch of government, especially Republican congressional leadership, finds the courage to act.โ€
  • โ€œWhat happened today [in Venezuela] is wrong. Congressional Republicans would say so immediately if a Democratic president had done the same. Their silence is surrender. And in that surrender lie the seeds of our democratic unraveling.โ€

โ€œEnough is enough,โ€ Booker concludes. With three years left in this administration, itโ€™s time to stop the (constitutional) bleeding.

Senator Booker wrote at length at a time when many Americans have lost the will or the ability to take in an argument laid out like this. For some people, itโ€™s easier to ignore common sense and stay in the fold of the cult. But Bookerโ€™s words are well worth our time and well worth sharing with others. His argument is not subtle or nuanced, and itโ€™s accessible to anyone who has taken a fourth-grade civics class: Congress should do its job, not Donald Trumpโ€™s bidding. The future of the Republic depends upon it. They would demand it if a Democratic president had done what Donald Trump didโ€”something that has been true over and over, but is all the more poignant with the anniversary of January 6 staring us in the face. Maybe Congress will remember what that day felt like and how they reacted. Maybe enough of them can muster some courageโ€”if for no other reason than that the history books, and likely voters at the midterms, will condemn them if they donโ€™t.

Make sure you share Senator Bookerโ€™s message with your elected officials this week. They need to hear it. They need to know you heard it.

A final note: a development we wonโ€™t be following this week, because it wonโ€™t be happening, is the federal criminal trial of former FBI Director Jim Comey, which was slated to start on Monday. This trial will not take place because the case was dismissed, in a serious blow to the credibility of Pam Bondiโ€™s Justice Department. There are, in fact, some guardrails that remain in place. And this year, weโ€™re going to rebuild more of them. Get ready to vote.

Many in Gaza to โ€˜Lose Access to Critical Medical Careโ€™ as Israel Suspends Doctors Without Borders

Criminal Israel has violated every aspect of the “ceasefire” and made a mockery of the promises of security guarantees tRump gave Hamas / the Palestinians.ย  It should make Ukraine really nervous of the same things he has promised them.ย  All tRump can see or cares about is his personal profit of building on Palestinian lands making profits over the dead bodies of the Palestinians.ย  ย He is OK with Israel hurrying up the slaughter to get to that profit point.ย  I hate this.ย  You should also.ย  ย Hugs

โ€œThe humanitarian response in Gaza is already highly restricted, and cannot afford further dismantlement,โ€ the renowned organization warned.

The Israeli government said Tuesday that Doctors Without Borders, one of the largest medical organizations currently operating inย Gaza, is among the 25 humanitarian groups that will be suspended at the start of the new year for their alleged failure to comply with Israelโ€™s widely criticizedย new registration rulesย for international NGOs.

According toย theย Associated Press, Israelโ€™s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs โ€œsaid the organizations that will be banned on January 1 did not meet new requirements for sharing staff, funding, and operations information.โ€ The Israeli government specifically accused Doctors Without Borders, known internationally as Mรฉdecins Sans Frontiรจres (MSF), of โ€œfailing to clarify the roles of some staff that Israel accused of cooperation withย Hamasย and other militant groups,โ€ย APย reported.

In addition to providing medical assistance to desperateย Palestinians, MSF has been an outspoken critic of what has itย describedย as Israelโ€™s โ€œcampaign of total destructionโ€ inย Gaza. The group said in a report released last December that its teamsโ€™ experiences on the ground in Gaza were โ€œconsistent with the descriptions provided by an increasing number of legal experts and organizations concluding thatย genocideย is taking place.โ€

Ahead of Tuesdayโ€™s announcement, Doctors Without Bordersย warnedย that the looming withdrawal of registration from international NGOs โ€œwould prevent organizations, including MSF, from providing essential services to people in Gaza and theย West Bank.โ€

โ€œWith Gazaโ€™sย health systemย already destroyed, the loss of independent and experienced humanitarian organizationsโ€™ access to respond would be a disaster for Palestinians,โ€ the group said in a statement last week. โ€œThe humanitarian response in Gaza is already highly restricted, and cannot afford further dismantlement.โ€

โ€œIf Israeli authorities revoke MSFโ€™s access to Gaza in 2026, a large portion of people in Gaza will lose access to critical medical care,ย water, and lifesaving support,โ€ the group added. โ€œMSFโ€™s activities serve nearly half a million people in Gaza through our vital support to the destroyed health system. MSF continues to seek constructive engagement with Israeli authorities to continue its activities.โ€

Pascale Coissard, MSFโ€™s emergency coordinator for Gaza, noted that โ€œin the last year, MSF teams have treated hundreds of thousands of patients and delivered hundreds of millions of liters of water.โ€

โ€œMSF teams are trying to expand activities and support Gazaโ€™s shattered health system,โ€ said Coissard. โ€œIn 2025 alone, we carried out almost 800,000 outpatient consultations and handled more than 100,000 trauma cases.โ€

Israelโ€™s announcement came shortly after Prime Ministerย Benjamin Netanyahuย met with US Presidentย Donald Trumpย in Florida, where both dodged questions about their supposed โ€œpeace planโ€ for Gaza after more than two years of relentless bombing. The Israeli military has beenย accusedย of violating an existing ceasefire agreement hundreds of times since it took effect in October.

Al Jazeeraย reportedย Tuesday that โ€œIsraeli forces have carried out strikes across the Gaza Strip as they continue with their near-daily violations of the ceasefire agreement, with Israelโ€™s genocidal war on the besieged enclave continuing apace and displaced Palestinians enduring the destruction of their few remaining possessions in flooding brought about by heavy winter rains.โ€

Russia carried out a record number of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine in 2025

I want to thank https://personnelente.wordpress.com/2025/12/31/attacking-ukraine/ for the link to this news article.ย  I think it is seriously important we realize Ukraine is suffering to keep the rest of the world safe.ย  If Putin has his way he will recreate the world of the USSR in the 1980s again, taking territory of other countries by force and stealing their resources, just as tRump thinks the US should be able to do the countries the US deals with or are in our hemisphere.ย  None of this will come to any good for the world.ย  Right from the start Ukraine should have been given the weapons it needed with no restraint on how to use them.ย  Biden did as much to damage Ukraine as Putin’s military did.ย  ย Biden forced Ukraine to fight with their hands tied behind their backs.ย  Thankfully Europe is realizing that mistake and removing the no attacks on Russian soil restrictions.ย  ย Hugs

Russia carried out a record number of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine in 2025

31.12.2025

In 2025, Russian troops carried out a record number of air attacks on the territory of Ukraine. According to the United24 platform, the enemy used more than 60 thousand guided bombs, about 2.4 thousand missiles and more than 100 thousand drones of various types.

Number of air alerts in Ukraine in 2025 / United 24
Number of air alerts in Ukraine in 2025 / United 24

During the year, at least 19,033 air alerts were announced throughout the country. The sirens sounded most often in the Kharkiv region (2,020 times), Zaporizhia (1,807 times) and Sumy region (1,793 times). The fewest alerts were recorded in Transcarpathia (126 times), Ivano-Frankivsk region (133 times) and Lviv region (140 times).

If in the winter and spring months there were one or two major attacks per month, then since June-July their number has increased significantly. During individual strikes, the enemy used up to 60 missiles and hundreds of drones, sometimes up to 700โ€“800 drones in a single attack.

The most massive attacks of 2025:

  • January 15: 177 targets (of which 43 missiles and 74 drones, air defense destroyed 30 missiles and all drones)
  • February 1: 165 targets (of which 42 missiles and 123 drones)
  • March 7: 261 (of which 67 missiles and 194 drones)
  • April 24: 215 (of which 70 missiles and 145 drones)
  • May 25: 367 (of which 69 missiles and 298 drones)

Starting in June, the shelling has intensified significantly:

  • June 29: 537 targets (of which 60 missiles and 477 drones)
  • July 9: 728 drones.

In August, the number of attacks remained at a high level:

  • August 21: 614 targets (including 40 missiles and 574 drones)
  • August 28: 629 targets (including 31 missiles and 598 drones)
  • August 30: 582 targets (including 45 missiles and 537 UAVs).
Consequences of the shelling of Donetsk : National Police of Ukraineregion
Consequences of the shelling of Donetsk : National Police of Ukraineregion

A record number of drones was recorded on September 7 โ€“ 823 targets (including 810 drones and 13 missiles), and on October 30 the enemy launched 705 targets (including 52 missiles and 653 drones). During November and December, massive attacks continued: the number of missiles reached 51, drones โ€“ up to 653 in one shelling.

United24 emphasizes that human suffering cannot be fully measured in numbers, but statistics clearly demonstrate the scale of the threat and confirm that Ukraine needs enhanced air defense and support from international partners.

Pro-ICE Democrat Is Afraid

One of the things that shocked me when I started following politics was how racist so many of the republican party members are and to be honest a few democrats as well.ย  They finally drove Steve King out due to his over the top hate for black people and constant promotion of whites as the only salvation for the country.ย  But I saw this in Reagan in the 1980s and it has gotten much worse.ย  So many openly racist people are now in the US congress and they are not just men; at least one is a woman from the south who openly hates Black people.ย  First let me be clear, I have heard the arguments made up by white supremacists with their false made up claims,ย  but when I got the chance to work with people of a different skin tone I found two things.ย  One was there was no difference between us in mental ability or the way we did our jobs, and second … Sorry but some of the nonwhite guys I knew were hot and made me horny as hell.ย  Now having said that I of course respected everyone’s boundaries, and I won’t say if I had a few interesting 4 day passes with persons of a different skin tone than mine.ย  But just say I did I can honestly report the melanin in their skin did not change their reactions or our pleasures on those passes … if they happened. OK, yes, they did and I loved it.ย  So did they. But you get my point.ย  The only difference between them and me at that age in that situation was our skin color and I saw how soft bigotry worked.ย  Two young white guys going into a motel in South Carolina raised no eye browes, but when I went to that same hotel with a dark skinned companion, we had to show our military IDs, give my license plate information, and plenty of other things.ย  That was my go to place because they had a nearby amusement park which we could pretend was what we were there for … not the hot sex happening in the hotel room.ย  So even then racism was real in the 1980s and every time it happened I saw the person I was with shrink a bit more inside themselves. Something I understood as an abused child.ย  We really need to do more to fight it.ย  ย Hugs

Trump Says the U.S. Struck a โ€˜Big Facilityโ€™ in Campaign Against Venezuela

This is another act of war committed by the US on a sovereign country.ย  ย What tRump is doing attacking boats and seizing tankers now doing land attacks is no difference from what Putin / Russia is doing to Ukraine.ย  ย Plus only congress can authorize a war, not tRump.ย  tRump is very honest as to why he is committing war crimes, he wants the oil for US companies and to get it he needs Maduro to leave office.ย  ย The oil belongs to Venezuela and its people / government.ย  ย It is not US oil nor US land.ย  ย tRump is being a total school yard bully in that he attacks a smaller country that can’t fight back well while completely giving in to Putin who he fears.ย  Hugs

The administration provided no details of what the president said was an attack last week linked to U.S. efforts to disrupt drug trafficking from Latin America.

President Trump said in a radio interview that the United States had knocked out โ€œa big facilityโ€ last week as part of his administrationโ€™s campaign against Venezuela, an apparent reference to an American attack on a drug trafficking site.

American officials said that Mr. Trump was referring to a drug facility in Venezuela and that it was eliminated, but provided no details. Military officials said they had no information to share, and the Central Intelligence Agency declined to comment. The White House declined to comment.

Mr. Trump made his statement on Friday during an interview with John Catsimatidis, the Republican billionaire and supporter of the president who owns the WABC radio station in New York. The two men were discussing the U.S. military campaign to disrupt drug trafficking from Latin America by striking boats suspected of carrying narcotics.

โ€œThey have a big plant or a big facility where the ships come from,โ€ Mr. Trumpย said, without saying where it was or explicitly identifying Venezuela as the target. โ€œTwo nights ago we knocked that out.โ€

Asked about the incident on Monday, Mr. Trump declined to say how the attack had been carried out or by whom but said it was along a shoreline.

โ€œThere was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs,โ€ he told reporters at Mar-a-Lago, his club and residence in Florida. โ€œThey load the boats up with drugs. So we hit all the boats, and now we hit the area. Itโ€™s the implementation area, thatโ€™s where they implement, and that is no longer around.โ€

The attack appears to be the first known to have been carried out on land since he began his military campaign against Venezuela. U.S. officials declined to specify anything about the site the president said was hit, where it was located, how the attack was carried out or what role the facility played in drug trafficking. There has been no public report of an attack from the Venezuelan government or any other authorities in the region.

While some officials called the facility struck a drug production site, it is not clear what role in narcotics trafficking the facility would have played. Venezuela is well known for its role in trafficking drugs, especiallyย cocaine produced in Colombia,ย but has not been a major producer of narcotics.

Mr. Trump has been promising strikes on land in Venezuela for weeks, part of anย intensifying pressure campaign on Nicolรกs Maduro, the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, who is under indictment in the United States for his role in the drug trade.

Mr. Trump authorized the C.I.A. to begin planning covert operations inside Venezuela months ago.

The United States has been conductingย military strikes on boats in the Caribbean and the Pacificย since September. The administration maintains that the vessels are transporting cocaine. The operations have killed at least 105 people so far, and have been called extrajudicial killings by critics who say the U.S. military has no legal basis for lethal strikes against civilians. The administration has defended the attacks by asserting that the United States is in a conflict with what it calls narco-terrorists who can only be stopped with military force.

Those boat strikes were originally developed as part of a two-phase operation.ย The second phase,ย which has yet to be officially announced, was to include strikes on drug facilities in Venezuela, people familiar with the planning have said.

Since beginning the strikes, Mr. Trump has announced what he has called aย blockadeย of Venezuela as the United States has begun trying to intercept oil tankers, cutting off a vital source of income for the Maduro government.

Mr. Trump hasย publicly acknowledged he has authorized the C.I.A.ย to plan for operations inside Venezuela.

Exactly what operations Mr. Trump had in mind for the C.I.A. were not clear, but they could include bothย sabotage operations and psychological operationsย meant to prod Mr. Maduro into making some mistake.

As always, the story Minneapolis residents are sharing is different from what ICE claims.

ICE agents violently restrained a woman in Minneapolis on Monday, dragging her through the snow and pinning her face down as onlookers shouted that the woman was pregnant.

During what was supposed to be a โ€œtargeted vehicle stop,โ€ย according to ICE officials, protesters swarmed the agents. Esme Murphy, a WCCO reporter,ย was on the scene, where she saw ICE holding a woman on the ground.

โ€œPlease let her go! Sheโ€™s pregnant!โ€ one onlookerย shouted.

โ€œGet her off of her fucking stomach,โ€ another said.

In response to this, one agentย fired a Taserย into the crowd. โ€œWho wants more?โ€ he taunted, according to WCCO.

โ€œWe kept yelling, โ€˜She is pregnant, sheโ€™s pregnant,โ€™โ€ resident Tonika Deutchย told Murphy. โ€œThey put their knees on her. We kept telling them, โ€˜She canโ€™t breathe, let her up, let her up.โ€™โ€

The woman was then dragged by one arm, as the crowd continued to yell and plead with the ICE agents. Bystanders threw snowballs, and ICE agents fired pepper spray into the crowdโ€”hitting Murphy, the reporter, as well as her photographer.

ICE called the Minneapolis Police Department for backup. Once they arrived, the officers determined there was โ€œno violence occurringโ€ against the agents. โ€œWe have been training our officers for the last five years very, very intensely on de-escalation, but unfortunately that is โ€ฆ often not what we are seeing from other agencies in the city,โ€ Minneapolis Police Chief Brian Oโ€™Hara told WCCO.

According to ICE, they succeeded inย arresting the targetsย of their operation: a young Ecuadorian couple who were abducted from their car, its windows shattered by agents. The woman is currently in custody in Illinois, and itโ€™s not known where her husband is being held. Two U.S. citizens were alsoย arrestedย for assaulting federal officers, according to CBS.
