White House Panicked Over ICE Optics? Democrats Preemptively Cave | David Dayen | TMR

Sam and Emma talk to David Dayen about the fact that the left  / progressive members of democrats in congress and how Chuck Schumer is trying to quiet that side of the party.  Dayen is a political analyst.  He claims that the leadership of the Democratic Party is refusing to use this moment to use ICE actions as reason to use the only leverage they have, the budget battle.  Schumer caved the first time, he caved the second time, and has no stomach for even starting this time.   He wants to just fill out his time as majority leader knowing he likely won’t be elected again and get as many high end donors as possible to set himself up as wealthy in private life.   We need different leadership.  But right now we need the public to push the party if possible.  We need the democrats in office publicly going on TV and pounding the table over this.  Hugs.

  1. Well, we’ll need someone somewhere to cover Dems showing up and pounding the table. When they do it in the legislature, they don’t get covered. When they do it elsewhere, they also don’t get covered. The other side frames it, and that’s what gets covered. Dems are screwed no matter what they do or don’t do.

    1. Hi Ali. I am not sure about the not covered. AOC and Bernie got lots of daily coverage and still do. And I see Chris Murphy almost every weekend on one Sunday news show or the others. There are several others that I can’t think of right now that are moving up by being seen. Podcasters are always happy to have a congress critter on to interview. I see positive progressive clips everywhere. But those clips are with people who some would say are just giving their opinion. But they have a platform and that is what democrats need right now. Leadership in my opinion is hiding in the halls of congress hoping people get sick enough of tRump’s crap and the leadership doesn’t want to piss any donors off by saying the wrong thing. Schumer still has not endorsed Mamdani the new mayor of NY who is taking the city by storm. The public loves him and his message of government working for the average person not just the wealthy. Why not ride the wave Chuck? In fact I will be posting a couple clips this morning on it. Hugs

      1. Those media do cover people, though they also pick and choose who they cover. They tend to not be on the floor of Congress where most elected Dems in DC do their work, though. (Not the halls.)
Anyway, people can look for and find what they need (or want) to see, but more people wait for news to fall into their laps after work, before bedtime, etc. And they don’t see what actually happens, day to day. Then when they have a few minutes, maybe they look at a podcast, only hear what they’re given, and think that’s true. Lots of things happen. People have to look for those things.

        1. Hi Ali. That is the point, not many people watch the floor of congress and that is not where right wing media talks to the maga republican cult. All a member of congress of either party needs to do is contact the media and say they want to come on and they have a platform to give their pitch.

I agree that the average working person is far too busy trying to survive and feed their families to be following the news like we do. However everyone who drives to work can listen to podcasts while doing it. I know I do but that is because I can’t stand to be without the media in my ears or the bad thoughts come.

My point is far too many democrats feel their congress floor speeches are enough or that their fundraising efforts are the end goal. But I just listened to Rand Paul on Joe Rogan for over 2 hours. No democrat has done that. Paul lied his ass off on immigration and what ICE was doing. Again no democrat went on Rogan to refute what was said.

My point Ali is the democrats are losing the messaging game because they are sitting on their asses and not getting out and addressing the people. Zohran Mamdani showed how to do it, get yourself in front of the voters. If democrats want to recruit people they need to be where people can hear them, and it is not C-SPAN. Hugs
