Convict labor has always been slave labor; id it right there in the first goddamned sentence:
The first thing that was done after Reconstruction was overthrown were legislatures passing laws to make it illegal for a black man to be unemployed.
This is hardly new. Prisons are the modern Plantations.

Yep. They picked up with prison labor in the South right after slavery was abolished. That was memorialized in the book, “Gone With The Wind,” even.
