Jackie Robinson, and More, in Peace & Justice History for 4/15

April 15, 1947
Jackie Roosevelt Robinson became the first African American to play in a major league baseball game in the 20th century. His stepping onto Ebbets Field in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform broke the β€œcolor line,” the segregation of professional teams.
The International League in 1887 began a wave of League-wide black exclusion, and it had been complete since 1899, when Bill Galloway became the last African-American player in white organized ball (Woodstock, Ontario).
Though hitless in three at-bats, Robinson started at first base, and the Dodgers beat the Boston Braves that day, 5-3.

“Jackie, we’ve got no army. There’s virtually nobody on our side. No owners, no umpires, very few newspapermen. And I’m afraid that many fans will be hostile. We’ll be in a tough position. We can win only if we can convince the world that I’m doing this because you’re a great ballplayer, a fine gentleman.”

“There was never a man in the game who could put mind and muscle together quicker and with better judgment than (Jackie) Robinson.”

An Unsettling Headline-

For the First Time, Artificial Intelligence Is Being Used at a Nuclear Power Plant

Alex Shultz Published April 13, 2025 | Comments (4)

Diablo Canyon, California’s sole remaining nuclear power plant, has been left for dead on more than a few occasions over the last decade or so, and is currently slated to begin a lengthy decommissioning process in 2029. Despite its tenuous existence, the San Luis Obispo power plant received some serious computing hardware at the end of last year: eight NVIDIA H100s, which are among the world’s mightiest graphical processors. Their purpose is to power a brand-new artificial intelligence tool designed for the nuclear energy industry.

Pacific Gas and Electric, which runs Diablo Canyon, announced a deal with artificial intelligence startup Atomic Canyonβ€”a company also based in San Luis Obispoβ€”around the same time, heralding it in a press release as β€œthe first on-site generative AI deployment at a U.S. nuclear power plant.”

For now, the artificial intelligence tool named Neutron Enterprise is just meant to help workers at the plant navigate extensive technical reports and regulations β€” millions of pages of intricate documents from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that go back decades β€” while they operate and maintain the facility. But Neutron Enterprise’s very existence opens the door to further use of AI at Diablo Canyon or other facilities β€” a possibility that has some lawmakers and AI experts calling for more guardrails.

PG&E is deploying the document retrieval service in stages. The installation of the NVIDIA chips was one of the first phases of the partnership between PG&E and Atomic Canyon; PG&E is forecasting a β€œfull deployment” at Diablo Canyon by the third quarter of this year, said Maureen Zawalick, the company’s vice president of business and technical services. At that point, Neutron Enterpriseβ€”which Zawalick likens to a data-mining β€œcopilot,” though explicitly not a β€œdecision-maker”—will be expanded to search for and summarize Diablo Canyon-specific instructions and reports too.

β€œWe probably spend about 15,000 hours a year searching through our multiple databases and records and procedures,” Zawalick said. β€œAnd that’s going to shrink that time way down.” (Emphasis mine- A. I worked at the nuke plant in my state in my 20s. I did Records Management. I’m not going to explain it all from back then the way I trained people, but it involves reading and interpreting what one has read in application to the function, part, area, etc. a document records, which is learned by reading the document, then coding it so it is efficiently retrieved later. So far, I don’t know that AI does that. Others who are more knowledgeable about records management and retrieval in this era and context may see better things than I see. The best worst I see is really angry and impatient engineers and inspectors in all the disciplines still at the plant. That’s no fun, anyway.)

Trey Lauderdale, the chief executive and co-founder of Atomic Canyon, told CalMatters his aim for Neutron Enterprise is simple and low-stakes: he wants Diablo Canyon employees to be able to look up pertinent information more efficiently. β€œYou can put this on the record: the AI guy in nuclear says there is no way in hell I want AI running my nuclear power plant right now,” Lauderdale said.

That β€œright now” qualifier is key, though. PG&E and Atomic Canyon are on the same page about sticking to limited AI uses for the foreseeable future, but they aren’t foreclosing the possibility of eventually increasing AI’s presence at the plant in yet-to-be-determined ways. According to Lauderdale, his company is also in talks with other nuclear facilities, as well as groups who are interested in building out small modular reactor facilities, about how to integrate his startup’s technology. And he’s not the only entrepreneur eyeing ways to introduce artificial intelligence into the nuclear energy field.

In the meantime, questions remain about whether sufficient safeguards exist to regulate the combination of two technologies that each have potential for harm. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was exploring the issue of AI in nuclear plants for a few years, but it’s unclear if that will remain a priority under the Trump administration. Days into his current term, Trump revoked a Biden administration executive order that set out AI regulatory goals, writing that they acted β€œas barriers to American AI innovation.” For now, Atomic Canyon is voluntarily keeping the Nuclear Regulatory Commission abreast of its plans.

Tamara Kneese, the director of tech policy nonprofit Data & Society’s Climate, Technology, and Justice program, conceded that for a narrowly designed document retrieval service, β€œAI can be helpful in terms of efficiency.” But she cautioned, β€œThe idea that you could just use generative AI for one specific kind of task at the nuclear power plant and then call it a day, I don’t really trust that it would stop there. And trusting PG&E to safely use generative AI in a nuclear setting is something that is deserving of more scrutiny.”

For those reasons, Democratic Assemblymember Dawn Addisβ€”who represents San Luis Obispoβ€”isn’t enthused about the latest developments at Diablo Canyon. β€œI have many unanswered questions of the safety, oversight, and job implications for using AI at Diablo,” Addis said. β€œPreviously, I have supported measures to regulate AI and prevent the replacement and automation of jobs. We need those guardrails in place, especially if we are to use them at highly sensitive sites like Diablo Canyon.” (snip-MORE; not tl;dr, though.)

Morons will be morons. Read on Substack

Elon Musk got into a little tiffy-tiff with Peter Navarro, and I have to say, I like seeing these guys destroy each other.

You can’t choose a side between Elon and Navarro. You can only hope both lose. It’s like trying to choose a side during the war between Iraq and Iran (the US picked Iraq), or when the Dallas Cowboys play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or when the Atlanta Braves plays of the two baseball teams in Florida, or a fight between the insurance emu or Flo from Progressive, or Ice T in Carshield commercials vs gutter filter commercials, or a contest between Nickelback and the Kars4Kids song, or a battle between ketchup on hotdogs and Domino’s Pizza.

Side note: I just Googled to make sure it is Ice T in those stupid Carshield commercials, and just because I’m trying to be accurate and informative to serve you, I’m going to get thousand of Carshield ads in all my shit now. You’re welcome.

If you see two fucknuts in MAGA caps in a slap fight, you don’t choose a side, and for the love of god, you don’t break it up. You should get some popcorn and encourage each fighter. β€œKick him in the nuts! Yeah, that’s how you do it. Hey, other guy. Are you going to let him get away with kicking you in the nuts like that?”

In case you don’t remember, Peter Navarro is a lying sack of turds. He was the director of the National Trade Council in the first Trump administration (sic), then director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy. Now, in Trump 2.0 (sic), he’s senior counselor for Trade and Manufacturing. He’s also the first official from Trump’s White House (sic) to serve time in prison for trying to steal the 2020 election. Now, there are at least two felons in the White House.

This week, Navarro β€œguaranteed” the Trump tariff war will not bring a recession, just like he guaranteed there wouldn’t be a pandemic from COVID-19. Instead of investing in stocks, I’d rather place wagers on Peter Navarro being wrong about things.

But what’s going on between him and Elon?

Last Saturday, a poster on Twitter/X defended Navarro’s intellect as a voice on trade. This is like when a MAGAt tries to tell us that Trump knows what he’s doing. Navarro is a big part of Trump’s trade policies. Musk replied that Navarro’s Harvard Ph.D. suggested he had more ego than brains and that he β€œain’t built shit.”

Musk has criticized Trump’s tariff war, and the two-day stock market crash, before coming back and crashing again, cost Elon at least $18 billion in Tesla stock. It’s kinda difficult to tell someone the tariffs are working when that someone just lost $18 billion because of the tariffs.

Then, Elon addressed an Italian political party (think of Nazis with risotto) by video and said, β€œBoth Europe and the United States should move, ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America.” That goes against Trump’s stance (for now), whose trade policy is wildly going in the opposite direction.

Navarro, who has been defending Trump’s tariffs, has said Trump’s tariffs will bring in over $600 billion in new annual revenue. That can’t be true at all because Trump is calling on other nations to negotiate, so these tariffs will eventually be reduced, either by negotiations or Trump chickening out because his balls dropped off again. If that is Trump’s intention (not his balls dropping off but reducing the tariffs), then we won’t be getting new revenue every year of $600 billion. But, if we do get $600 billion revenue from these Trump tariffs, it will be from American consumers. Navarro should be capable of understanding this because he has a PhD in economics from Harvard.

Navarro has written a dozen books which most economists call bullshit. Despite Navarro’s PhD from Harvard in economics, he believes a trade war with higher tariffs will allow us to cut more taxes. I don’t have a PhD in economics from Harvard, but I still know that tariffs are taxes on American consumers. Duh.

Navarro and Musk don’t agree on trade. So, after an insult from Elon, Navarro sent one back, saying Elon wasn’t a car manufacturer, just an assembler of parts. Uh oh.

Elon responded to the video (which we don’t need to watch), saying, β€œNavarro is truly a moron.” He also said Navarro is β€œdumber than a sack of bricks.”

And then Elon tweeted about 20 more times to defend himself and his shitty cars.

Elon is right about this. Peter Navarro is a moron who is dumber than a sack of bricks, but Elon is a moron, too. Elon is a lying Nazi-supporting moron.

But Elon got the better of this since he told Navarro to consult with economist Ron Vara. Who? Ron Vara is an economist Navarro has quoted in several of his stupid books. The only thing wrong with that is Ron Vara doesn’t exist. It’s an anagram of β€œNavarro.” Peter Navarro has to quote a fictional economist because he can’t find a real economist who shares his dumbasseconomic beliefs, probably because they’re fucking insane. Navarro is that one guy in the office who’ll advise that today’s lunch should be from Blimpies (I just finished 30 Rock).

Even Elon’s brother, Kimbal, said, β€œWho would have thought that Trump was actually the most high tax American President in generations?” He also said, β€œThrough his tariff strategy, Trump has implemented a structural, permanent tax on the American consumer.”

This is like Rob Gronkowski knowing FTX cryptocurrency wasn’t real money before Tom Brady lost $30 million in it.

White House spokesgoon Karoline Leavitt was asked about the sparring between Elon and Navarro, and she explained it with, β€œBoys will be boys, and we will let their public sparring continue.”

Oh, yeah. Leavitt is also a moron.

Maybe Trump is getting all of his trade advice from Gronk.

By the way, this is what inspired this cartoon.

Disney Introduces Christian Character After Ditching Transgender Story

https://www.newsweek.com/disney-christian-character-transgender-story-laurie-win-lose-2037780

This is an important story even though it is an older one.Β  This shows how the rights constant badgering companies and using the idea of protecting the children, calling those who understand at LGBTQ+ children like to see themselves represented in an accepting world.Β  This shows how the rights not stop attacks on the rights of minorities over the last 6 years are working to erode the expectancy, tolerance, and the representation of these minorities.Β  The haters on the right are loud and very vocal, they give their opinion nonstop using incorrect misleading studies or lies.Β  We need to be just as loud and in your face to fight back.Β  Democrats need to start / return to defending the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized people. The democrats shrank back and hid letting the republicans loudly lie and misinform people.Β  The republicans spend 215 million attacking trans people in the presidential election.Β  Β Kamala Harris did not fight back, did not call out the adverts misinformation and lies, did not spend money attacking those ads.Β  She gave one lame response when directly asked about the trans ad attacks.Β  She minimized them and barely pushed back.Β  Β But notice it is an openly Christian character not one of the other religions.Β  Hugs

ByΒ

Live News Reporter
Disney is introducing an openly Christian character into itsΒ PixarΒ animated showΒ Win or LoseΒ shortly after a transgender storyline was pulled.

NewsweekΒ has reached out to Disney via email outside of regular working hours for comment.

Why It Matters

The moves comes amid a wider cultural shift toward conservativism, in tandem with the beginning of PresidentΒ Donald Trump‘s second term in office.

Disney has made moves to placate Trump, who previously branded the organization as “woke.” In December, Disney’sΒ ABCΒ NewsΒ agreed to a $15 million settlement over a defamation lawsuit, marking a win for the president.

What to Know

TheΒ Win or LoseΒ series is Pixar’s first-ever original long-form animated series. It follows the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, throughout the week as they prepare for their upcoming championship game.

Each episode focuses on a different character and their life off the field, including “the insecure kids, their helicopter parents” and “even a lovesick umpire.” It premiered on Disney+ on February 19, 2025.

In the debut episode, the character of Laurie is introduced, and is openly Christian. This character begins her scene with the words, “heavenly father” and there is an angel cutout in her bedroom.”

In December,Β DeadlineΒ reported thatΒ DisneyΒ had cut “a few lines of dialogue” from anΒ episode that referenced a character’s gender identity.

A spokesperson for Disney confirmed that the story arc was removed and provided the following statement toΒ DeadlineΒ andΒ The Hollywood Reporter: “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”

This is the first openly Christian character to feature in a Disney film since 2007’sΒ Bridge to Terabithia.Β The film features young adolescent children Jesse Aarons (played by Josh Hutcherson) and Leslie Burke (played by AnnaSophia Robb) , who in one scene attend church together, and discuss religion on the way home.

Trump and his allies have often been critical of Disney and what they describe as its “woke” policies. In a May 2023 social media post, Trump branded the entertainment juggernaut a “woke and disgusting shadow of its former self,” criticizing its move toward diverse casting in some of its recent movie remakes.

Following raging culture wars over such issues as LGBTQ+ rights and diversity, equity and inclusion, Disney appears to be tempering its approach towards inclusion.

An exclusive poll forΒ NewsweekΒ conducted by Redfield and Wilton Strategies in July found thatΒ 34 percent of viewers disapprovedΒ of Disney’s attempt to add more LGBTQ+ topics to its content.

Since returning to office, Trump has signed an order that rolled back transgender rights, emphasizing the importance of the issue to his agenda in his second term. Trump’s executive order declared that the federal government would recognize only two sexes: male and female.

What People Are Saying

Mark Mitchell of Rasmussen Reports on X:Β “Openly gay out. Openly Christian in!”

One social media user on X:Β “Again f*** Disney for removing the trans storyline from WIN OR LOSE, but so far it’s a great show.”

Another social media user on X:Β “Another week, another two incredibleΒ Win or LoseΒ episodes. The way they show both the kid’s and parent’s struggles and perspectives is top-notch. The animation, the story, the voice acting, the music… it’s all PERFECT. The team behind this show is just brilliant.”

What’s Next

Episodes ofΒ Win or LoseΒ are being released each week up until March 12.

A second season of the show has not yet been announced.

Trump chickens out again Read on Substack

This is not a conspiracy theory, but it’s something to watch out for: Trump declares β€œLiberation Day” and raises tariffs on every nation in the world except Belarus and Russia. Stocks plummet, and Wall Street loses nearly $6 trillion. Then, after all sorts of promises from him and his goons about being tough, Trump chickens out and delays the tariffs for 90 days, and Wall Street rebounds. What needs to be questioned is if Trump gave any insider information to his friends that he was going to delay the tariffs, thus making Wall Street rebound. Can I get a β€œhmmm?”

Trump said, β€œI’m telling you, these countries are calling us up, kissing my ass. They are dying to make a deal. β€œPlease, please, sir, make a deal. I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything, sir.” And then, Trump chickened out again without making any deals. Not one.

One nation that did NOT kiss Trump’s ass is China, who retaliated by raising their tariffs on us to 84 percent. Trump retaliated by raising tariffs against China to 145 percent. China is the only nation not spared by Trump’s 90-day delay.

China threatens to stop buying our products and even stop watching our movies. This is bad news because not only will that hurt Hollywood’s revenue but also make our Chinese competitors smarter because they won’t be sitting around all day watching shit like Dude, Where’s My Car?.

Trump is mad at China for retaliating. In his feeble, twisted little mind, he believes it’s personal. How dare they retaliate, which the European Union did too. The EU is now delaying their retaliatory tariffs.

So, what happened to β€œLiberation Day?” There was a giant dog and pony show for β€œLiberation Day,” and now it’s β€œnever mind?”

Trump claims 75 nations called to negotiate, but as we’ve learned over the years, Trump lies. I’m pretty positive nobody told him, β€œI’ll make a deal. I’ll do anything.” But, of course, other nations are willing to negotiate. That’s what diplomacy is. Diplomacy is NOT attacking an ally by saying they should stop being a country and join yours. Diplomacy is not demanding that it give you parts of its territory. Diplomacy is not attacking your friends with tariffs to make them negotiate. You could negotiate without the attack.

Trump is making every one of his policies personal, which is how a narcissistic toddler governs. This is bullying. I would not be surprised if this entire thing is only about Trump getting more people to kiss his ass.

Attacking the entire planet with tariffs, then backing down a few days later, isn’t strength; it’s cowardice. It also shows the world that Trump is indecisive, suffers from mood swings, and can’t be trusted.

Trump’s National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said, β€œThis was Trump’s plan all along.” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said this was Trump’s β€œstrategy all along.” White House spokesgoon Karoline Leavitt said, β€œMany of you in the media clearly missed the art of the deal.”

I did miss β€œArt of the Deal,” Karoline, which Trump did NOT write and probably hasn’t even read. But do you know what I didn’t miss, Karoline? I didn’t miss Trump’s β€œart of the deal” when he negotiated ending a government shutdown with Nancy Pelosi. I didn’t miss that Trump walked into those negotiations with a little bit of something for his border wall and walked out of the negotiations with the government reopening and getting nothing for his stupid, racist border wall. Was that his strategy all along?

I also didn’t miss that Trump negotiated a new NAFTA with Canada and Mexico during his first term (sic) and broke those promises in his second term (sic).

I’m sure other nations didn’t miss those β€œarts of the deals,” nor did they miss that when Trump starts chaos, he’s impatient and will back down quickly. When push comes to shove, it’s easy to push Trump down. If you’re playing chicken with Trump, he’ll swerve first.

Every nation that negotiates with Trump on tariffs will start with the upper hand. Just like Obi-Wan Kenobi, they have the high ground.

Trump’s post about other nations kissing his ass is him showing his cards. All they have to do is kiss his ass by appealing to his giant ego, and they will out-negotiate him. It also helps them that our president (sic) is a dunderhead.

Fascist blogger Curtis Yarvin (anti-democracy, pro-slavery, says Whites have higher IQs than Blacks, cited by JD Vance as an β€œinfluence,” attended Trump’s inauguration), talked about Trump’s β€œconfidence” in 2.0 in an interview with The New York Times, saying, β€œIt’s almost like he actually feels like he knows what he’s doing.”

Isn’t that exactly what we want in a president, for him to β€œalmost feel like he knows what he’s doing?” That should have been one of the campaign messages.

What happened to make Trump chicken out with the tariffs wasn’t because he got 75 phone calls from nations ready to negotiate, but phone calls from oligarchs freaking out about the stock market. Trump says they got β€œyippy,” but nobody was saying, β€œYippee.” Maybe something more like, β€œYippee-ki-yay, Motherfucker.”

Cartooning colleagues, do NOT steal β€œyippee-ki-yay, Motherfucker” from me.

Trump gave himself credit for Wall Street’s rebound yesterday, but today, it’s going β€œyippy” again. But I’m sure Trump almost knows what he’s doing.

Creative note: I wanted to do something with β€œyippy,” but I couldn’t resist this penguin idea after it landed in my brain. I may do β€œyippee ki-yay” later if it’s not stolen from me.

Music note: I listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but only for a few minutes because this cartoon didn’t take long to color.

You know this is what the fundamentalist religious right wants to do this here.Β  This is one of the reasons the maga right loves Russia and Putin, he hates who they hate.Β  He wants a straight cisgender stereotypical white society the same as they do.Β  Hugs

A Topical Humor(ish) Two-fer on Tuesday

Trump Wins! by Clay Jones

Trump wins another golf tournament while the world burns Read on Substack

Donald Trump spent the weekend in his β€œbillionaire bubble,” as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer likes to say (he’s not always ridiculous), avoiding the stock market crash he created with his stupid tariffs, a ceremony honoring four soldiers who died in a training accident in Lithuania (which Trump couldn’t find on a map), and hundreds of thousands of Americans in every state protesting his administration.

Sometimes you want to get away, but Trump didn’t take Southwest. He took Air Force One (sic) to South Florida to play golf…again. So far, taxpayers have spent $26 million for Trump to play golf since his inauguration (sic). He’s on track to surpass the $151.5 million we paid for him to play golf during his first term (sic).

Naturally, Trump played on a course he owns so he can collect the money the government spends for him to play golf there. He also made an appearance at a LIV tournament hosted at one of his resorts, which was paid for by Saudi Arabia. Remember when Republicans accused Biden of collecting money from foreign governments without any proof? How many howled this weekend about Trump doing business with the Saudis? Too many to count, right? That was sarcasm.

Trump also played in a tournament, which he said he won. The White House announced with β€œBREAKING,” that he won the Senior Club Championship at his Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter.

When asked by a reporter how the tournament went, Trump said, β€œVery good because I won. It’s good to win. You heard I won, right? Did you hear I won? Just to back it up from there, I won. I like to win.” He was then asked about his handicap, which was clearly displayed when he said β€œhe won” 17 times.

Trump did answer, β€œVery low. I have a very low handicap.” OK, maybe he didn’t answer. This is like in the film Rain Man, when Raymond Babbitt says, β€œI’m an excellent driver,” which had only been done in his driveway, much like Trump being a good golfer only on his courses. This win is as suspicious as The Grinch winning the Who’s Christmas Cheer Award.

This golf win is amazing because it’s Trump’s third win this year. That’s three tournament wins within four months. Trump is on golf fire because he won two tournaments last year, and he didn’t even play the first round in one of those. He won two other tournaments two years ago. Of course, all these wins were on his golf courses. He’s not just winning tournaments as he was also voted the 2024 Trump International Golf Club Most Improved Player. He’s 78 years old, and he’s improving?

That would be like me winning the Clay Jones 2024 Most Awesome Cartoonist in the World award. I could probably say something like Trump did: β€œSuch a great honor!”

What’s weird about all these tournament wins is that there are never any videos of them. Even the photo Laura Loomer posted on Twitter/X, to suck up to Trump, was taken from a long distance, meaning an amateur took it because they wouldn’t allow a real photojournalist near the β€œtournament.”

Image

Even those palm trees had to sign an NDA. Why didn’t they just take the photo from the International Space Station?

Rick Reilly, the author of Commander In Cheat, tweeted in all caps after a Trump tournament win last month, β€œREALLY? THAT’S AMAZING, SIR! CONGRATS TO YOU, THE CADDIES WHO KICK YOUR BALL OUT OF THE ROUGH, THE STOOLIES WHO LET YOU WIN OR GET THROWN OUT OF THE CLUB, THE SPINELESS PRO AT YOUR CLUB WHO DOESN’T WANT TO GET FIRED, AND THE 100S OF FEET OF GIMMIES YOU GIVE YOURSELF! BRAVO!

After that β€œwin,” Reilly said, β€œHe’s never won a championship at a course he doesn’t own and operate. He’s played in Pebble Beach. He’s played in the Tahoe one, where there are rules and judges and cameras. And in those, he’s never finished in the top half. So, he wins when anybody who disagrees that he won is out of the club. That’s how he gets it.”

Reilly also said that Trump has a β€œturbo-charged golf cart” so he can get ahead of the competition and put some distance between him and his opponents, giving him β€œtime to cheat.”

Think about it. Other golfers who share Trump’s politics see the president of the United States (sic) kicking the ball on a course he owns and then winning the tournament aren’t going to call him out. Trump once stole a child’s golf ball, and when the kid tried to speak up, his father silenced him. For Republicans, it’s OK if Trump steals little boys’ balls.

After Trump’s win in January, Shark Tank host and Trump sycophant Kevin O’Leary tweeted the announcement saying Trump won with a β€œsizzling” round of 68, later saying, β€œIt was a great day.” Except when Trump’s name was posted at the top of the leaderboard, all the players and attendees were taken by surprise because nobody had seen Trump that day. How β€œsizzling” is it to win a tournament you didn’t play in? How fast is that golf cart?

The point of all this is just how petty Trump is and that it’s supported and enabled by his cult and staff. The White House and Laura Loomer are sending him congratulations like these things are real. Is there someone assigned to applaud every morning when he successfully puts his pants on all by himself? I’m surprised the White House doesn’t announce, β€œBREAKING!” every time he wipes his own ass (does he?). His golf β€œwins” are about as transparent as DOGE. There’s as much evidence of Trump’s tournament β€œwins” as there’s evidence of 200-year-olds collecting Social Security.

The other point is how obtuse and out of touch he is with the country. While the economy is tanking and people are protesting in every city and soldiers are being buried, he’s kissing Saudi ass and pretending to play golf.

Trump’s golf resorts need fewer bed bugs and more alligators.

Creative note: I’ve seen way too many cartoons with the graph arrow-thingy being Trump’s tie. Just be glad I didn’t do a mind-if-I-play-through cartoon.

Music note: I didn’t listen to any music today, but did I mention I lost my Airpods in Washington? I’m still bummed about it.

Ya Think So?

Abigail Disney: β€˜Every billionaire who can’t live on $999m is kind of a sociopath’

John Harris Mon 7 Apr 2025 00.00 EDTS

She is one of the heirs to the Walt Disney fortune – and has long argued for rich people like her to pay more tax. Now she is working out how best to meet the challenge of Trump, Musk and the politics of chaos

My conversation with Abigail Disney opens with the kind of bog-standard line that starts most chats. But because she is a left-leaning American, with a record of righteous criticism of the man now once again in charge of her country, I suspect it might invite a very long answer indeed.

Still, out it comes: β€œHow are you?”

β€œIt’s a good question,” she says, β€œbecause we’re all struggling with it.”

A deep breath. β€œI spend a lot of time trying to think of reasons to be optimistic, because I don’t know how to function without that. And I want to find the energy and the grit for a really long fight. This isn’t just four years … you know, there’s a whole civilisation-level reset to be done. I mean, I heard the other night when Trump spoke, he mentioned that we would get Greenland one way or another. And then there was laughter. Laughter! I just thought, β€˜Oh, we have sunk so low.’”

The film-maker (and the grand-niece of Walt Disney) is speaking to me on video call from her home in Manhattan. She talks with a mixture of speed, eloquence and certainty – partly because her view of Donald Trump and his allies is all about something with which she is well acquainted: wealth, and what it does to people.

β€œTrump is an inheritor,” Disney tells me. β€œHe never acknowledges it, but he wouldn’t have been able to do any of the things he did without an inheritance. He absorbed the lessons of inheriting money almost unfiltered: β€˜You have this money because you’re special.’ If you read about his childhood, it’s like the textbook worst way to raise a person – you know, he was violent, he was a bully and he was rewarded for that, even as a very small child. And the more money he had, the more he exhibited these bad qualities, and the more people told him he was wonderful.”

I then mention something she well knows: that Trump’s sidekick Elon Musk is also from a very wealthy background, having started his first business ventures with money provided by his father, and then becoming rich beyond the dreams of avarice. This, she tells me, partly explains the frazzled morals of someone who has just imposed all those cuts to overseas aid, with apparently no regard for the consequences.

Among the schemes Musk has frozen, Disney points out, was the Pepfar programme, AKA the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which is estimated to have saved 25 million lives by supplying medicine to people with HIV and Aids around the world. β€œThere are people suffering and dying today because of that cut,” she says. β€œThere are children who have HIV who shouldn’t because of Elon Musk. Now. As we sit here and talk.”

She exhales. β€œThat natural human proclivity to say, β€˜Hmm, that doesn’t feel right’ – he doesn’t have it. Trump doesn’t have it. They’re spending no time in shame, and shame is a righteous emotion. It’s not an emotion you want to live in, but it’s an emotion you want as a motivator sometimes. And where is it? Where’s the shame?” (snip-MORE)
