We in the US need to have the same hope and constant drive as the LGBTQ+ in Poland.ย  See their government is anti-LGBTQ+ and the leader calls them “evil”.ย  But they did not give up and kept working to change the hearts and minds of the people.ย  ย And it is working.ย  We need to do the same.ย  Hugs.

June 10, 2018: Warsaw’s LGBTQ pride equality march

Poland made a landmark move for LGBTQ+ rights after it banned hate speech against sexual orientation and gender in a new set of regulations.

Currently, the countryโ€™s laws prohibit hate speech on the basis of race, religion, and ethnicity. โ€œThese provisions do not provide sufficient protection for all minority groups who are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, prejudice and violence,โ€ the national justice ministry said.

โ€œThe new regulations aim to more fully implement the constitutional prohibition of discrimination and to meet international recommendations on standards of protection against hate speech and hate crimes,โ€ the ministry added.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has previously criticized the countryโ€™s lack of hate crime protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk approved the new legislation. It now moves on to Parliament. If Parliament passes it, President Andrzej Duda will have the option to sign it into law or pass it. He has previously stated that he believes LGBTQ+ individuals are โ€œevil.โ€

However, Dudaโ€™s final presidential term ends next year, and the ruling party hopes they can get someone to replace him in time to sign the legislation into law.

Bart Straszewski, an LGBTQ+ activist in Poland,ย toldย PinkNews, โ€œI felt like a second-category citizen, and we were treated like second-category citizens. The government is telling you that you donโ€™t deserve equal rights, that you are not creating families, and that you are an agent of the West trying to fight family values or tradition.

ย

โ€œThe atmosphere was hostile. We felt that they didnโ€™t want us here, but we still were here, we still were fighting for our country because we are part of it,โ€ Straszewski added.

Poland previously has not been friendly to LGBTQ+ rights. During the Law and Justice (PiS) partyโ€™s time in power, the country became one of the most viciously anti-LGBTQ+ countries in Europe. Citiesย designated themselves โ€œLGBT-freeโ€ zonesย and government-run media outletsย regularly demonized and spread liesย about the queer community.ย Gay reporters were firedย from publications as part of the national purge.

However, advocates have been working tirelessly to grant protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. A TV anchorย apologized this yearย for his past anti-LGBTQ+ statements and came out in support of the community. Activistsย also rejoicedย when the Polish Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is not illegal, per Polandโ€™s Constitution.

Supporters of transgender rights gathered at the Capitol during a press conference on March 17, 2022.

Amid a flurry of recent school board policies aimed at the rights of transgender students, California passed a new law in July that prevents schools from requiring staff to notify parents if a student identifies as LGBTQ.

The new law,ย AB 1955, came in response to aย handful of school boardsย adopting policies that require teachers and otherย school staff to notify parentsย if a student identifies as a gender other than whatโ€™s on their school records.

โ€œTeachers can still talk to their parents,โ€ Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a press conference on Monday in which heย touted a new plan to improve career opportunities for adults. โ€œWhat they canโ€™t do is fire a teacher for not being a snitch. I donโ€™t think teachers should be gender police.โ€

LGBTQ advocates said that โ€œforced outingโ€ policies, such as those adopted in Chino, Temecula and a dozen other districts, infringe on studentsโ€™ privacy and could potentially harm students whose parents disapprove of their identity.

The state sued toย stop Chinoโ€™s policy, and most districts either scrapped their policies, tweaked the language or put them on hold.

This act โ€œcould not be more timely or necessary, and LGBTQ+ students across California can breathe a sigh of relief,โ€ Tony Hoang, executive director of Equality California, which advocates for LGBTQ rights, wrote. โ€œLGBTQ+ youth can now have these important family conversations when they are ready and in ways that strengthen the relationship between parent and child, not as a result of extremist politicians intruding into the parent-child relationship.โ€

โ€˜The battle continuesโ€™

Opponents of the new law said that parental notification policies actually strengthen ties between students and parents, and schools should not withhold information on such important matters. Even though a parental notification measure that would have applied to all schoolsย failed to qualify for the ballot, opponents vowed to keep fighting.

โ€œThis (law) doesnโ€™t clarify anything. And nothing prevents individual teachers from bringing the issue up with parents,โ€ said Roseville school board member Jonathan Zachreson, an organizer of the failed ballot measure and whose district was among those that passed parental notification policies. โ€œSo the battle continues.โ€

The new law also requires the state Department of Education to update itsย LGBTQ resourcesย and encourage school districts to offer counseling, support groups, clubs, anti-bullying policies and other measures to support LGBTQ students and their families. Schools would have to pay for those services with their existing funding.

โ€œI donโ€™t think teachers should be gender police.โ€
Gov. Gavin Newsom

LGBTQ young people are particularly vulnerable on school campuses. In aย recent surveyย of 18,000 LGBTQ young people nationwide, nearly half said they had been bullied in the past year, and 10% said they had attempted suicide. Those whose schools supported LGBTQ rights were less likely to suffer from mental health challenges.

Even if the new law sparks a backlash in more conservative areas of the state, California was right to move forward with it, especially as some states push ahead with their own parental notification policies, said USC education professor Morgan Polikoff.

โ€œWill everyone like this law? Certainly not. Will it lead to conflict? There is no doubt,โ€ Polikoff said. โ€œBut I am hopeful this will be good for the queer kids in Californiaโ€™s schools and will point the way toward similar efforts in other states.โ€

Judge Denies State Superintendent’s Motion to Dismiss Defamation Lawsuit

A Tulsa Judge denied a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit against Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters on Tuesday.

A Tulsa Judge denied a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit against Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters on Tuesday.

Bixby Public Schools Superintendent Rob Miller filed a defamation lawsuit against State Superintendent Ryan Walters after Walters called Miller a liar and a clown in July in response to Miller’s concerns over Title I funding.

Walters had asked the judge to dismiss it, saying it would set a bad precedent going forward. However, the judge ruled that because of the claims Walters was making he needed to show evidence to support them. The case could still be dismissed at a later date if proper evidence is provided.

A date for further action on the case has not been set.

Robert Brooks, 43, died a day after being attacked by several correctional officers at the Marcy Correctional Facility on Dec. 9. His death has prompted a state investigation.

ย

The office of New Yorkโ€™s attorney general released body camera footage Friday showing the fatal beating of a state prisoner this month by correctional officers who punched and kicked him repeatedly while he was handcuffed on an infirmary bed.

The incident, which has drawn outrage from political leaders and was condemned by the officersโ€™ union asย โ€œincomprehensible,โ€ย is being investigated by state Attorney General Letitia James. The inmate, Robert Brooks, 43, died in the hospital a day after the Dec. 9 attack.

ย

โ€œI do not take lightly the release of this video, especially in the middle of the holiday season,โ€ James said at a virtual news conference.

โ€œThese videos are shocking and disturbing,โ€ she added.

Brooks can be seen in the videos with his hands cuffed behind his back. In one video, he is sitting up as an officer presses his foot down on him. He is then punched by two officers.

At another point, he is forcefully yanked from the bed by his shirt collar and held up above the ground, his face visibly bloodied.

OSI is currently conducting an investigation into the death of Robert Brooks, who died on December 10, 2024 following an encounter with Department of Corrections and Community Supervision officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County.

Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to begin the process of firing 14 workers at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County, where the incident occurred. They include correctional officers, sergeants and a prison nurse. In the interim, all have been suspended without pay, except for one officer, who already resigned. In a statement following the release of the videos, Daniel Martuscello, the commissioner of the state corrections department, said his office has launched its own investigation in an effort to bring โ€œinstitutional change.โ€

โ€œWatching the video evidence of Robert Brooksโ€™ life being taken left me feeling deeply repulsed and nauseated,โ€ Martuscello said. โ€œThere is no excuse and no rationalization for a vulgar, inhumane act that senselessly took a life. This type of behavior cannot be normalized, and I will not allow it to be within DOCCS.โ€

Colorado Man Accused Of Attacking Reporter, Saying ‘This Is Trump’s America Now’

The Colorado TV reporter told police that he believed he had been followed by the man because he is Pacific Islander.
ย

A Colorado man is facing possible bias-motivated charges for allegedly attacking a television news reporter after demanding to know whether he was a citizen, saying โ€œThis is Trumpโ€™s America now,โ€ according to court documents.

Patrick Thomas Egan, 39, was arrested Dec. 18 in Grand Junction, Colorado, after police say he followed KKCO/KJCT reporter Jaโ€™Ronn Alexโ€™s vehicle for around 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the Delta area. Alex told police that he believed he had been followed and attacked because he is Pacific Islander.

After arriving in Grand Junction, Egan, who was driving a taxi, pulled up next to Alex at a stoplight and, according to an arrest affidavit, said something to the effect of: โ€œAre you even a U.S. citizen? This is Trumpโ€™s America now! Iโ€™m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!โ€

Alex, who had been out reporting, then drove back to his news station in the city. After he got out of his vehicle, Egan chased Alex as he ran toward the stationโ€™s door and demanded to see his identification, according to the document laying out policeโ€™s evidence in the case. Egan then tackled Alex, put him in a headlock and โ€œbegan to strangle him,โ€ the affidavit said. Coworkers who ran out to help and witnesses told police that Alex appeared to be losing his ability to breathe during the attack, which was partially captured on surveillance video, according to the document.

ย

According to the stationโ€™s website, Alex is a native of Detroit. KKCO/KJCT reported that he was driving a news vehicle at the time.

Egan was arrested on suspicion of bias-motivated crimes, second degree assault and harassment. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday to learn whether prosecutors have filed formal charges against him.

Eganโ€™s lawyer, Ruth Swift, was out of the office Friday and did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

It wasn’t all bad: Despite election defeat, progressives scored big wins in 2024

Organizers tell Salon how they pulled off major victories in a year marked by the rise of the far-right

Byย Tatyana Tandanpolie Staff Writer

Snippet:

For many on the political left, 2024 was disappointing.

Even as inflation ebbed, Americans still struggled with housing costs and necessary expenses. The U.S. role in enabling Israel’s war in Gaza sparked protests in the streets and on college campuses. The far-right continued to target marginalized groups, most notably immigrants, transgender people and women. To top it off, the mid-summer excitement at Vice President Kamala Harrisโ€™ entry into the presidential race following President Joe Bidenโ€™s eleventh-hour exit petered out with the election of President-elect Donald Trump โ€” again.

But even as the political landscape appeared to grow bleaker, Americans still fended off at least some of the efforts to encroach upon their rights. At times, they even helped pass policies that not only protected core freedoms but could genuinely improve quality of life.

As they reflected on 2024 and looked ahead to 2025, when the Trump administration’s ultraconservative agenda is poised to make their work harder, advocates behind wins in LGBTQ+labor and reproductive rights shared with Salon how they successfully organized against legislative efforts to roll their rights back and planted hope for a better future.

Abortion rights enshrined in seven states

Ballot measures seeking to establish or protect abortion rights were on 10 states’ ballots this year as organizers fought to protect access and reverse bans enacted in the wake of the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade. Seven of those states โ€” Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada and New York โ€” would indeed pass measures to enshrine a right to abortion access in their respective constitutions.

Proposition 139 in Arizona provided a legal means to upend the state’s 15-week abortion restriction and established state constitutional rights to abortion access until viability and afterward if a healthcare professional deems it necessary for the pregnant person’s physical or mental health. The proposition also barred the state from penalizing any individual or entity “for aiding or assisting a pregnant individual in exercising the individual’s right to abortion.”

Arizona for Abortion Access, a seven-group coalition of reproductive health, rights and justice organizations, including Reproductive Freedom for All and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, led the campaign supporting the proposed amendment, which took effect almost immediately on Nov. 25.

“The passing of Proposition 139 speaks to the broad support โ€” across the entire state, across all political parties, and across voters of all different backgrounds โ€” for reproductive freedom,” Erika Mach, Planned Parenthood Arizona’s chief external affairs officer, told Salon. “People want the freedom to make medical decisions with their doctor and family, without government involvement.”

To place a constitutional amendment on the state’s ballot, the coalition had to obtain signatures from 15% of registered voters in the state โ€” just under 384,000 signatures โ€” and file the petition by early July, according to theย Arizona Secretary of State’s website. (snip-MORE)

The Pure Hypocrisy of Anti-Trans Christian Nationalists

This is an incredibly informative post on how to understand and deal with Christian apologetics anti-trans disinformation and lies.ย  I started following this young person when he first left his church and faith doing videos on how the anti-science he was taught all his life in his church schools was incorrect and wrong.ย  Now he exposes how Frank Turek got his breasts reduced in the Navy because it did not look male enough to him … yet he doesn’t feel that had anything to do with gender.ย  The hypocrisy hits you hard in the face, but Frank can not see it, because he is paid not to.ย  The video also talks about the Littman study and the Cass report in a small section.ย  The video also talks a small amount on how the right / religious people frame their talking points to get sympathy for their views by pretending to save the innocent victims.ย  ย If there is any doubt I support trans people 100% let that end.ย  Trans rights are human rights. Trans women are simply women, trans men are men.ย  I look forward to the day we don’t need to use the word trans, just as I do the day when we can call same sex marriage just marriage.ย  As I think it was Spock in Star Trek who said a difference that makes no difference is no difference.ย  ย Hugs
