The situation with the routers I thought was solved. I was unhappy but about to get even more unhappy. I opened programs and started adjusting setting on them. And hit a road block the size of a tank. On my browser I got the message that a third party organization was now in control of my browser settings. If you know me at all you know I cannot tolerate not having full control of my computers. So first I tracked down what the warning meant. It means a security setting was changing how my browsers were acting and what they would display. So in this case I had added two new security programs, one on the router I then cancelled but it wouldn’t stop until Apr 6th and the VPN I use had added a safety protocol add on that also was to prevent some of the very things the router added security did. Again some of that was done by sending all your traffic through their servers so they could monitor the addresses of where you went to make sure they were not on a malicious site list . I take my web surfing privacy seriously. To the point I wont let my ad blocker down even to access news / cartoon sites. I have three anti-tracker programs to block and trackers and then to find and delete any that get through. There is somethings you have to let happen and get through in order to surf the web, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave them on your system when you are done.
So what to do. I clearly couldn’t use the new router until after the 6th of April. I also needed to shut down the VPN add on. There was only one way to ensure it was fixed correctly. Yesterday morning I removed the new router and hooked up the old one. Hey the Russian hack was causing me less problems than the new router and my own security apps were. But a weird thing happened. When I went into the router settings, and I had full control again. I could set the settings I wanted to set the way I wanted them. Interesting. Was the fact that it was offline for several days so couldn’t contract its control network what cleared it? I thought I had unplugged it several times but maybe I did not? Or maybe I did not leave it unplugged long enough? Or was it something on my computers feeding that setting lock out. I did not know but it is still working correctly even today. Which makes me happy, but sets up more questions. Do I switch routers after April 6th?
So now I needed to reset everything one more time. So first I put the Windows USB in the video computer, restarted it coming up on the USB drive. I put the blogging computer into recovery mode / environment and set it up to do the factory wipe and install. Waited for that to be done on each. When they were done I went through the settings in the control panel and then the Windows settings menus. I renamed the computers. Hours slowly creeped by. I listened to podcasts while I worked. Then the going online to update Windows and install all the security and other programs. More hours went by. With Windows, between each set of upgrades the computers had to be restarted and the settings checked again. But late yesterday about 7 PM I had the computers loaded and checked. I was happy with the installs and the way the programs were working. But there was still work to be done. I had to run the defrag program I prefer and not only defrag the programs but the free space as well. I also had to move files from storage on the hard drives. So I set that to happen and took my sore tired body to bed. I got up at 4:30 to write this and get started on some posting. I have to go this morning to have my eyes again checked. The doctor was not happy with something happening in my left eye. So Ron has to go with me. My eyes will be dilated. So when I get home my posting will have to wait until I can see again. I may lose this entire day again. Sunday through Wednesday lost, and Friday morning will be taken up with the driver’s license renewal.
So below I put few entries from a router security site. The other day I noticed a weird series of actions, just a couple small things, like one of my securities cameras alerting when nothing was there to trip it. Alone I wouldn’t be bothered by it, the cameras are set very high detection of movement and will alert on moths or spiders. If it moves outside my home I want to know about it and have a video. It could have been anything and the system is linked so if one alarms the rest activate. But it bothered me. So I went into my router and looked over my settings. I noticed right away my UPnp setting was active / on. That was weird because if you know anything about cyber security or home networks you know that is a way hackers get / set up an open door to use your system. The UPNP is universal plug and play. It lets other devices connect to the home network easier. Things like printers, Xboxes, and other non-computer devices. Things can still connect with it on but it takes more work, like my printer I have to hook up through the IP address instead of the computer just finding it.
Now I want to reassure everyone that if you are hacked by the Russian or other nation states they are not after your bank account or credit card number. That is a different level of hacker, a much lower one. And looking at the threat maps so many computers worldwide are being used by attackers without the owners knowing they are being used. At this point it is almost a losing game for the average homeowner to play to protect themselves. I run tight security even though my knowledge of computers is getting to be decades out of date, and they still got through to my set up. But then I go to places where there are Russian bots and influencers are. But if you have argued with a rando on Facebook or some other social media or downloaded a picture or other file with a political bent it could have been a bad actor looking for your IPS to get to your system. To nation states like the Russians your internet connection with a decent computer are far more valuable to them. With modern internet speeds (even as slow as the US speeds are compared to the other developed nations) and even the average computer today the damage that can be done when those computers are linked together is immense. If nothing else if they get a large number of computers from an area focused on the same goal they can do everything from massive DDOS attacks to clogging up business internet access. They can simply clog up the local internet to keep a local utility / government agency from accessing the internet. They can direct computers to do brute force attacks against businesses or utilities, or a government agency. Once I was up on all this stuff and what could be done and how. That was years and years ago. Now I only know enough to keep watch and hopefully spot it if it happens to my stuff. This is what the last few days have brought.
I noticed a couple errors and had a disconnection of the computers that could only be cleared by restarting the router. That was enough to clue me in. That shouldn’t have happened. So I went into the router and looked over the settings. I noticed they were not as I normally have them. One in particular caught my attention. The UPnp was active. That lets someone hack into the router pretending to be one of your devices and change any settings they like. Once they are in they change the firmware of the router to block attempts to change what they set up. I tried to set it to off. I was shocked when the router was forced back to the sign on screen. I signed on again and tried again to shut it off. Same result. Damn, then I knew there was a problem. So I checked the firmware. While it said the signature was fine I figured something was wrong. So I tried to update it. Again the machine forced it self back to the sign on page. I tried to manually upload the firmware updates and it again forced it self back to the sign in page. So I went setting by long lists of settings to check the router. I was locked out of any setting that would make it harder to use the router by a remote source. Who ever had hacked the firmware just wanted to use my internet and they did not mess with anything else. I tried to do a normal factory reset, it seemed to work but it failed as I still had no control of those settings. I tried the even deeper factory reset the company claimed would clear any problem but that also failed. There was no way around the firmware lock. I tried different things many times. If it had not been that when they either used it or first set it up that it knocked both my computers offline, and alerted the one security camera, I wouldn’t have suspected. I have no idea how long the hack was there; it could have been there for a month or more since I last checked the router or it could have been done the day I noticed the hiccup. Thing is I never noticed a power drain from either computer, nor a bandwidth loss and I push my computers hard. Ron had complained he was having trouble with his apple box and YouTube with it often not loading or being really slow. I tested it and looked at the bandwidth monitor and did not see a problem, so I assigned it the highest priority. He was still frustrated with it.
So now that I see there is a problem, Ron started reading about modems and he liked a Tp-link modem. I did a quick look and it had the power to broadcast the distance I wanted, could handle the many (seriously seems everything in the house connects to the internet) devices I needed, and it had the bandwidth I had to have to push internet to all these devices. I was stunned at the price. The last router was nearly $400 dollars when I bought it back a decade ago, and this was only $164. I figured the prices had really come down. Good. I double checked the security it claimed to have, remember that because that will come back to bite me. It bragged it had some of the best security in the business. I ordered it for next day delivery and went back to using the hacked old router.
Sunday during the morning news shows I dumped both computers. Simple process, one I used the return to factory condition recover commands, the other doesn’t have a recovery environment so I simply use a Windows 10 install USB to delete all disk partitions wiping out what is there and then installing a new copy of windows. As the bios has the Windows’ license keys it doesn’t cost me anything but time. A bunch of time. The resets only take about 20 minutes, then I have to load all my programs while updating windows. That takes more time every time I do it as I have more programs to install and windows has more updates to do. I had just got a couple more security programs I like but that would cause problems on the second video computer. Long story short the main blogging computer installed great. Then I unpacked the router, and I was so frustrated and angry with it, I made a stupid mistake. One thing I hated was you could connect to the router setup via wireless instead of just hard cable which is a huge security risk, and then a I found out I would have to use my phone to set up an online “in cloud” account with the company to have any control or use of the router. I had to download an app from the company and then make an account with them setting myself up to spam from them to adjust any settings. But the router had little in the way of user control over the security settings. I was able to do some but the intrusion detection and the DDOS protections were an added price and had no user control. To get them you had to accept a content filter that was not adjustable. Think of it as parental controls put on adults. It was $55 a year on discount. I could have spent that on a more expensive router that had that built in security with adjustable controls. So I signed up for it while I set up the user settings as best I could. The plus is the router does have more broadcast power and more bandwidth than the old router but the negative but less control over security. That day we all had issues. The router was fighting me and James. James got blocked from 5 legitimate sites and finally gave up on the router and opened his own hotspot.
Then I went back to setting up the computers. I was happy with the speed of the router as my computers are connected by ethernet cable to the router. But it fought me on somethings it shouldn’t and on the video computer the install of some programs went badly with software seeing the router as a third party control blocking my control of those programs. I dumped the computer again and started over. I finished up the installs on it last night but have yet to move the over 1.5 TB of files over to its hard drives. I started doing that on the primary blogging computer and it is still running. I have about 1.5 Tb of files from my computers and another 600 GB of files for Ron’s computers. After each large Windows updates I have to go back through the settings and stop the default settings from sharing everything a computer does with Microsoft. If you doubt this go through your privacy settings for example. Turn them all off except your camara / microphone permissions for just programs you want to have them. And if your anti-virus / firewall program allows you to do so turn off your camera being accessed by the chrome browser when you open a site with chrome. I use Norton 360 for one of my security programs and it has a setting for blocking programs from accessing your cameras. But all through the settings menus you find share with … default settings turned on. Turn them all off. They do not change the way the computer works for you but does make it a tad bit harder for Microsoft and their types from adding more to the database they have on all of us.
So yesterday was a wash for the roundup. Too much going on to do any big posts, but I did get a few news stories out. Today or tomorrow I have to go to get my new glasses. On Friday I have to get my drivers license, so will have to find time to get it all together. So this week the roundup will be hit and miss and maybe a bit skimpy. Best wishes to all.
Russian state hackers target Dutch routers: Volkskrant

The two most interesting aspects of this story to me: (1) The Dutch told victims about their routers having been hacked and (2) they advised that the hacked routers should be thrown away. Well done. A Russian hacking group known as 74455, Sandworm and BlackEnergy, has been targeting Dutch routers belonging to private individuals and small and medium sized businesses. The bad guys are part of the Russian intelligence service. It is not clear if the hacking is linked to the war in Ukraine. The number of hacked routers is not known. All this came to light due to an investigation by the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD. The malware on the routers communicates with other Russian controlled computers in a network which is used for sabotage, spying and the spread of fake news. And, of course, routers that allow outside access are particularly vulnerable.

Your Router Is Collecting Your Data. Here’s What to Know, and What You Can Do About It

First of all, my router is not collecting any data about me. CNET lives in the fishbowl of consumer routers. There is a bigger world. Crist reviewed the privacy policies for D-Link, Netgear, Asus, TP-Link, Eero, Google Nest and Arris (really CommScope). Every one confirmed that the company in question collected personal data for the purpose of marketing. All the companies also acknowledged that they share user data with third parties for marketing purposes. Such are consumer routers, one reason to look into secure routers. Crist wasted much of the article looking into whether a router tracks web activity. There is no one answer to that question as parental controls and assorted security features require the inspection of web traffic. Points of note:
–Asus and Google Nest were the only companies that let you opt out of data collection
–D-Link refused to answer questions about privacy
–best for opting out of data collection: The Motosync app for Motorola routers (run by Minim) has a very clear option
–worse: D-Link and TP-Link, which do not offer any direct means of opting out
–worst: Eero. The only way to stop Eero devices from gathering data is to not use them.
The Asus instructions for opting out in the article are wrong. The correct path to the option is Advanced Settings -> Administration -> Privacy tab. This is what it looks like. The defensive steps in the article are incomplete. The most obvious omission is to use a VPN or Tor. Both hide activity from the router, just as they do from the ISP. Another option is to use a router with a web interface rather than a mobile app.

Once upon a time there was a bug in WatchGuard routers. The company fixed it in May 2021. Still un-patched routers are being infected by bad guys in Russia, specifically part of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency. Not only have the nerds in charge of administering the boxes not installed bug fixes, they also left the buggy routers open to unrestricted remote administration without any of the available security options that WatchGuard provides for restricting remote access to the boxes. You could make a case that the techies doing defense are just as much, if not more, at fault that the Sandworm malware authors. The malware was first seen about three years ago and has been dubbed Cyclops Blink. It abuses the firmware update mechanism to allow it to remain running even if the box is re-booted. Currently only WatchGuard devices have been infected, but the NCSC warns that it could be adapted to other platforms.
UPnProxy: Eternal Silence

Discovered by Akamai, a bug called UPnProxy is still alive and well, six months after they first publicized it. When abused, it attempts to expose TCP ports 139 and 445 on devices connected to the targeted router. Out of 3,500,000 UPnP routers found online, 277,000 are vulnerable to UPnProxy, and 45,113 of them have already been infected by hackers. This is yet another reminder that consumer routers ship with UPnP enabled by default to cut down on tech support requests. Peplink and pcWRT routers ship with UPnP disabled. Many devices were found vulnerable, including some from Asus, D-Link, Belkin, DrayTek, Edimax, HP, Monoprice, Netis, Netgear, Ubiquiti, SMC, ZyXel, ZTE. Also versions of OpenWRT are vulnerable.
I am pretty proud there is a round up today. I love the roundup and I wake up early. Today I got up at 4:30 AM and at 5 AM I started the roundup. I got half way through the first 400 pages when I lost the entire thing. The reason I lost the entire thing was my router. We have been having issues, well really Ron was on his electronics for about a month. I sort of dismissed it because I couldn’t replicate it when he told me. But now the entire router cut out. I got one side of the router back up and running. After hours. Took me a lot of resetting and initializing and trying to adjust thing. Some parts of the router are still off line. Once I got the computers / internet up I investigated new routers. I was doing this as Ron kept telling me all the issues he has had with his electronic over the last few months that I apparently had not paid the needed husband in charge of the electronics should have done.
I have found something I did not know. Routers are now only good for 3 to 5 years. There is an entirely new standard since 2019. Our router was about 10 years old. Back then I needed a really strong router so I got one nearly $500.00 dollars.
I did some quick research and found one far better than our current one for only $165.00 and I ordered it. It will be here tomorrow some time. So the problems of the day solved right? Nope. I had to go lay down, and Ron has not been feeling well all day and after lunch my body gave out so we both went to bed until about 2 PM. I started working again and the toilet in the center of the house backed up. Shit. Well no luckily it was not, it was pee.
Last summer the electric company replaced the pole behind out home. They had a really grand machine on tracks that could dig the hole and hold / carry the pole and do all the work. It was small enough to go between the homes. But the sewer pipes run between the homes and apparently this thing crushed them. So every now and again we have to dump boiling pots of hot water down the toilets to clear any slow drainage. Yes the park knows and it is on their to do list. We have a nice green flag out there to say so. It doesn’t help the toilets to drain.
Anyway after 8 big pots of water the toilets are working great again and I could get back to the roundup. I won’t mention that I did have to go get Ron, who was napping because he did not feel well, after the first four pots because my back gave out, I couldn’t hardly walk much less carry boiling water. Ron was not happy I did not wake him before trying to carry boiling water. Oh well I am a bad boy rebel. And on to the cartoons / memes
Ron and I both have teeth issues. I had such pain in my mouth when I was younger and seen dentists that I went over 30 years without getting any dental care. In that time I developed a lot of problems. Like my bones in my body my teeth were dying and decaying. When I went to a dentist about five years ago they had a heck of a fight to save most of my teeth and I have a life long problem now with periodontal disease and even after the surgeon took the bad teeth and cleaned out the infections I still fight infections around my teeth. We spent about 10 grand having my teeth fixed and crowns put over the breaking teeth. Right now we are trying to budget nearly $500 dollars because I have an infection around one tooth that they have to go in and clean out and pack with antibiotic. I had that same area done only a year and half ago. The US has to have dental care for seniors and the disabled. It is seriously important. I am missing a tooth in the front because I ran out of insurance before I could have the needed dental surgery to implant it. It will cost 5 grand. This is something other countries consider rights for the people in their country, but the US is too worried about someone losing profit to worry that someone can not eat.

When you think of the turn around from the last administrations handling of the Covid pandemic Biden has done great work for the country. 6.2 million jobs have come back, wages up, growth happening, record profits for the corporations and the wealthy. All in less than a year while fighting the misleading right wing media arm of the Republican party.
This is a catch 22 situation. If Biden does add more sanctions on Russian oil, the prices of gas in the world may rise, it may violate the contracts already signed, the right wing media arm of the Republicans would go crazy attacking Biden. However if he doesn’t sanction the Russian oil companies then he gets attacked by everyone. The fact is the US increased the importation of Russian oil under tRump and it has already decreased greatly under Biden. The situation has to do with the type of oil and where it can be refined. Oil and what is done with it is now global, it is not limited to one country. That said the Democrats have proposed a bill in congress to sanction all the Russian oil exports. Lets see if the Republicans join the Democrats on this or just claim the Democrats are against capitalism and want to hurt oil companies.

I just got home from taking Ron to his eye test. He is not going to need a new prescription and all his stuff seems well. I did not fare so well. Yesterday I sat in the chair and the doctor had me read what I could. Then he covered my left eye and I read what I could. Then he covered my right eye and I asked what happened to the room, did he hide the eye chart. My left eye was horrible. I had not noticed the degradation. He said I was about 20 / 80. My cataracts are a 2 and a 1 out of 4 I have no blood vessel issues, no diabetic retinopathy, and no signs of nerve damage. But for some reason my left pupil is sluggish and there is no reason for it to be. So when I go get my new glasses the doctor wants to check the eye again. I like that office, but they are quite a distance from us. As I had to get new lenses, I got new lighter frames. My current frames are heavy. I got titanium flex frames, progressive lenses, and a gradient tint. same things I have on my current glasses. I like large lenses. I had small ones for years and got to hate the gap above and below the lenses. So this last pair I got big, and at First Ron did not like them, but now he does and he is getting bigger lenses himself. He doesn’t need a new prescription, but his lenses are chipped so they need to be replaced. My glasses were $645 and $119 of that was the frame. I looked at a similar frame that was the same color and style but cost $225 dollars and I couldn’t see why they were worth so much more. Anyway maybe when I get them I won’t need such large fonts anymore. 😀😂😃😎😎
I am starting the morning news and the roundup. But things will be delayed and maybe not even published today because I have an eye check up this morning and my eyes will be dilated. Not sure how long it will take to clear them up enough to work on the computers. The last time Ron had his done he was unable to do much but watch TV with dark glasses all day. I am a diabetic with several eye issues like cataracts and a stigma. I have to have a prism in my lens ( forget which eye ) or no matter how good the prescription everything is still fuzzy and blurry. Before they found the prism problem I had to run my fonts huge and I still run them larger than most people. People who get email from me already know I like larger fonts and it reduces eye strain. Now it is true they were fostered, because those adoption agencies do not have large warehouses they store kids in, they don’t have orphanages. They use foster families. Most of those families have many children they care for, many make their income off fostering kids. Many of the kids were adopted. You keep saying they were not adopted; the adoption agencies say they were. So please tell me how you know the kids were not adopted? And what happened to them?
I am willing to have discussions with you but do try to have some coherence. You say leftism is dragging the entire world down the shitter. Wow how powerful the leftism must be, the entire world. Of course the countries that have the highest standard of living are leftist countries by the standards of the US. So tell me what countries you view as shitholes, and if you want, what is a leftist. International law is binding on all countries and backed up by treaties and signatures to legal bodies like the UN. There is a huge difference between the two. They are not the same at all. Plus in this case the agreement violated treaties that US has already signed and accepted international laws. The US / Canada safe third country agreement was found in violation of the laws. These agreements have to agree with prior agreements and treaties.

The person writing the comment that was removed doesn’t get notified and has no way to know why it was flagged or who flagged it. There is a request for review and I hit them, but I have never seen the review have any effect. I have had comments on review for over two months with no resolution. The southern border is secure, one of the most secure of borders. The norther border is not only not secure in many places it is not even marked or patrolled. In fact the northern border often runs through towns, down the center of roads, or is just sections of beach. Why do some people focus on the well patrolled and watched southern border and not the wide open northern one confuses me. There has to be something different about the people crossing them … Oh I got it skin color maybe?
The wall is not practical, it is not effective, and it is easily defeated. We all seen the videos of people scaling the new walls, cutting them with battery operated saws, or using makeshift ladders to go over them. The idea of a wall is only a media gimmick, a political tool, a pretend solution to please the anti-immigration crowd. There are long sections where the wall cannot be built due to terrain, where people don’t want to give up their land, where it is an environmental disaster. It simply is a not needed boondoggle.

These are polices the GOP are behind and all make American Lives better: Securing the border. Finish the Wall – the materials are there, awaiting construction, Ensuring we don’t have another chaotic exit, leave folks behind strategy, anywhere else. Improving Heath Care and reestablish Private Insurance with less government. Having Infrastructure that is really Infrastructure and not a money to political cronies bill. Stopping all of the concessions to our enemies in return for a bribe of a relative. Continuing what the new VA gov an other GOP govs are doing by ensuring the lies of CRT are not in school curriculum. Stopping using govt bureaucracies as political tools. Rebuilding the military. Withdrawing from Iran and Paris deals.
None of these divide the people like Dems policies do nor are they designed to keep Dems in power.
There are limits and rules to every right in the US. How is it freedom to push misinformation that is responsible for killing many people and holding back the recovery from a pandemic? It is not anti-freedom to make sure that the public has the correct true information and that misinformation distribution is curbed or labeled as such. Spotify has begun labeling all misleading misinformation about Covid and says they will include links to the correct information. It also is a free market decision for those who disagree with the company to remove their music. Again no violation of freedom.
