Library definitely should lower the shelves down , reaching up that high is considered safety first.
Hi Sean. Libraries normally have stools or ladders that one can use. I just posted today about a Walmart that required a 17 year old alone to put very heavy grills up on the top of the shelves by himself. I noticed him struggling and so started helping him. Then what I feared happened: the kid lost his strength and balance, and the grill was about to knock him off the ladder to the concrete floor. I acted instinctively. I slamed my left shoulder under the grill, stopping it from knocking the kid down, and then used both arms to shove the boxed grill out and away from both of us. The rest is on the post. But in the US profit is king and workers are disposable. As for libraries, I spent my childhood hiding in them. Hugs
Hi Scottie, exactly—that’s why I said library shelves should be lowered. People shouldn’t have to climb or struggle to reach books on unnecessarily high shelves, especially when safer designs are possible.
Your story about that 17-year-old really reinforces the bigger point: we shouldn’t wait for an accident to happen before we recognize a safety problem. You saw the danger and stepped in instinctively to protect him. That could have prevented a very serious injury.
Safety should come first—not after someone gets hurt. Sometimes a simple change in design can prevent a major accident. 🙏
And I love that libraries were such an important part of your childhood. 📚🤝 Hugs.
Hi Sean. The sad truth is I was scared to go home. Plus for many years I was forbidden to have books at home, even school books as the adopting father felt they were responsible for making me grow up not manly enough. His example was that I did not like sports or play them like his hellspawn did. He banned me from watching anything on the TV but news and sports. As I hated sports I did not get much TV time. He never finished 8th grade, could barely read, and had no use for either in my life. The librarians kept telling me I could take the books home and did not have to put them back before I left, so I finally had to tell them I couldn’t have books at home. So they kept the books I was reading behind their desk for me. Yes they suspected my abuse as did a lot of the town but no one did anything. When I was 8 years old one librarian handed me a book to read. It was about a boy and girl who were being abused and how to get help and how to tell an adult you trusted. She was disappointed that after I read it I did not confide in her. She asked me a few pointed questions but I denied everything. I was so scared my adopting parents would find out about the book and her questions that I almost stopped going to the library.
After all I knew what would happen if I told, they had explained it to me in very painful detail after they were accused of child abuse by my school when I was in the first grade. We moved three times in like 6 or 8 months; I was taken out of 1st grade and never finished it. They moved us to a small cow town in the country where there were more cattle than people. I was enrolled in 2nd grade at the local school. I was picked up by a police officer and taken to therapy and doctor’s exams. Because I refused to say anything to anyone the abuse continued. For the years that the cop picked me up he used the trips to abuse me. He would take me to his girlfriend’s home, where they would have sex and I was involved. I pleased both of them. So by the time the librarian tried to help me I figured that would mean someone new would abuse me or things would get worse somehow. Hugs
Hi Rawgod. Sadly the majority deal with US politics so people from other countries may not get all the humor or the snark. Most of what I post in these is an attack on US politics and the US systems for helping its people. A lot deals with the abuse companies heap on employees. I enjoy doing these posts, and with my horrible eye sight they are easier for me to do than other types of posts. Hugs
