  1. The meme about looking for a biological cause for transness touched a personal nerve. That’s what we autistics have been saying for decades about autism. Even the last line is valid when you replace “Trans people” with “autistic people”: Autistic people are who they say they are, not what a diagnosis forces them to be.

BTW, I couldn’t view the tumblr memes via your post unless I enabled my VPN. Which is odd because if I access the memes directly, they are accessible without the VPN.

    1. Hi Barry. I understand the biological cause argument and why it is disturbing. I remember when there was a push to justify being gay by finding a gay gene. The people who believe in conversion therapy and changing the sexual orientation were delighted as they felt if it could be a confirmed medical thing causing it, then they could test for it and then change or remove the cause before birth basically erasing gay kids / people from existence. Just as you said about autism. The good news is biologists say what happens is far more complex in the womb and the chemical soup between the woman’s body and the developing fetus. I don’t understand the need for bigots and haters to refuse to accept that people are different and it is OK to not be the same as they are. I am hopeful that autistic people can be seen as normal in society. If some people struggle with some situations it is OK for society to assist them without rancor, negative labels, or belittlement of the person needing extra help. We are all different from each other and everyone needs a little help dealing with things sometimes. Best wishes.

      1. We are what we are. Once you’re born, you are bringing your self to the table, as it were, and it’s up to parents, grandparents, even siblings to mold, to encourage, to accept who you are. Often that becomes part of the problem, and often it IS the problem. Discipline, punishment, praise, neglect and acceptance all have a part of it.

      2. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head when you say “I don’t understand the need for bigots and haters to refuse to accept that people are different”. Unfortunately it seems that most societies tend to “other” those who are different, classifying the majority as “correct” “normal” or “healthy” and the minority as “wrong”, “abnormal” or “disordered”. The bigots and haters are those who are proud of their prejudice and shout it to the world. But in most societies you can find an underlying current of suspicion of minorities that is much broader than the open haters and bigots.

        1. Hi Barry. What you said about the underlying current is true. Which is why it is important to push back on the bigotry with positive representation and support for the minorities targeted. I guess for the first time in decades the favorability of gay people and same sex couples fell some and it was all due to the constant negative attacks and comments of the tRump administration, religious bigots wanting a Christian theocracy, and right wing attempts to wipe out any media from schools and libraries that showed the LGBTQ+ kids / people in a positive light. Recently the media companies such as Pixar and Disney studios which had been representing gay kids and same sex couples along with trans characters positively have announced they removed all that content from their current shows and movies. The democratic party used to be very vocal in supporting the LGBTQ+ and antibullying campaigns in schools and media. But for the last four years or so the corporate democrats and corporate strategists have warned democrat canidates to avoid the subject of equality and civilal rights for the LGBTQ+ community and run away from it. That left the only voices out there in the media and on the internet being the bigots and haters. The LGBTQ+ community, especially the trans community feels abandoned by the democrats who don’t want to upset the mythical center or right leaning people they think they somehow will vote for a democrat if they think they are right leaning enough culturely. Sad to see how fast we have regressed and moved into the past. Best wishes.

    2. Hi Barry. I forgot to address the tumblr memes. How can I fix it so you can see the memes / cartoons with out trouble. I stopped using the Cagle site for cartoons because of the issue you and others overseas were having seeing them. I am not sure how to fix it because I am not sure what site I got them from or which site is the problem. Thanks for any suggestions. Best wishes.

  2. I haven’t looked too deeply into the cause. Unlike the Cagle site which blocks NZ access, tumblr doesn’t. I have no problem accessing those memes directly from their website. It’s only when those memes pass through WordPress that I have to use a VPN to view them. I haven’t got an immediate answer as to why it’s occurring. For me the solution is simple. I just need to activate the VPN to see the blocked items. However I do realise that that is an option not available to everyone.
